Peter Willmot - Artist Statement and Biography

Peter Willmot is a self taught Artist from Wakka Wakka tribe, Cherbourg QLD.

My paintings are of stories handed down from two of my Grandmothers who are full blood descendents of the Wakka Wakka people. One of my Grandmothers, Doris Murray (Nee Bone) who is still living, is acknowledged as the Queen of our people.

“MOONDAGUTHA” is one of these stories. His creations are painted through the eyes of my Grannies and me.

The style interpreted in these paintings is from paintings and artifacts which are found throughout Wakka Wakka country. Many of the symbols used where handed down to me by male Elders who have taken me through ceremonies. These symbols are used only in these two specific paintings.
