Wilson's Peak

From Teviot Gap return S66 (8km)

Park the car at or near the road entrance for Mt Superbus. Cross the grassy paddocks to the south and safely cross the barbed wire fence into rainforest above the paddock. Make your way up to the crest of the ridge to find a well worn foot pad. Follow this ridge all the way to Wilson's Peak. Note that the knoll at 502756 has a ridge on the north side of it's escarpment that can be followed down to Kinnanes Falls 2 km away.

When the cliffs of Wilson's Peak are encountered, follow the footpad counterclockwise around the peak until an easy ascent marked with orange tape (in 2002) provides a quick ascent to the summit. From the summit trig, a short track to the north leads to a nice viewing of the area north of Wilson's Peak.

From Boonah Border Gate return M66 (13km)

Follow the rabbit fence along the road that leaves Carney's Ck Road at 540730 on the Mt Clunie 1:25000 map. Vegetation is interesting passing through both rainforest and open forest with various interesting views of Wilson's Peak. The rabbit fence ends abruptly at the cliffs of the summit. Contour the base of the cliffs in a counterclockwise direction until on the west side of the peak and find the way up described above.

From Kinnane's Falls and the Verandah M77

The verandah is worth doing twice for this walk. Park the car at a bend in the Teviot Gap road prior to the ascent to the gap at grid location 518772. Follow the road around the bend and then a cleared path with a "no camping" sign in front. Follow this path for about 100m before making a bearing for the ridge at 764767. The old rabbit fence can be followed to the start of the verandah. The verandah is a narrow ledge on a large cliff face and should be followed SSE until it ends at the top of the escarpment. A well worn foot pad or cattle track can be followed contouring around the top of the cliff until close to Kinnanes Falls. A careful descent to a stringybark overlooking the falls can be made here. It is reccommended that no more than two people are at this platform at any time.

Head west to gain the top of the main ridge and follow this south and then WSW over several small knolls until the ascent to the 1024 m knoll at 502757 is reached. Note that the last 100m can be a difficult ascent through grass tufts on steep loose soil. The track from Teviot Gap is now followed to the summit as described above.

An interesting descent can be made by returning the same way and then at 496750 taking a bearing east until finding a water course. Follow the water course until a large cliff (waterfall) prevents further progress. Contour over the ridge to the right of the watercourse and continue to contour around to reach another slabby basalt creek. Several scrambles and a contour to the right to negotiate a waterfall will lead to a lovely creek junction. Follow the creek for another kilometre before reaching smooth granite slabs. These can be negotiated by moving high on to the grassy slopes on the east side of the creek. Once the slabs are passed, stay in the creek for a few hundred metres before following a path up towards the verandah once again. 1
