Mistake Mountains

Mt Mistake

Situated at 337152 (not 345165) at 1092m, Mt Mistake is the highest peak in the Mistake Mountains area. In January 2003, the route taken was the Winder track from 388064 to the Winder at 357109. This high ridge reaches above 1000m in places was at this stage well maintained by a slasher. Walking downhill after the first knoll, a tall native tamarind had dropped a lovely supply of fruit which was used to make a nice lemonade on returning to Brisbane.

After the winder, national park begins and the once logging track is at best very faint. A reasonable camp can be made in a fern glade at 354127 but there is no official camp site and several tents would make to great an impact unless well spread out. Following the ridge north-west over a larhe knoll, the track at times becomes discernable particularly where the ridge narrows.

Descending the ridge to the saddle before Mt Mistake, the destination can be seen as a conical hill through the trees. If you find an old laminated forestry map around here please return it as I miss it dearly!

The ridge up to the top of Mount Mistake has a couple of big red cedars on it. This is quite remarkable considering this was a logging area once. The top of Mt Mistake is clad in rainforest like the rest of this walk but at least you have bagged it! Return by the same route. There is good water to the south and west of the winder.

Times:These times are a conservative estimate, fast walkers can trim at least an hour off. The lack of a trail made the section from the winder much slower.
