Fort LeHaven
is a popular place to visit because of the history that took place
on this site. Originally the headquarters of the Order of the
Guardians of St. Bartolomeo de Qinqe, Fort LeHaven
is now the home of the Qinqean Home Guard Academy. Each year the
Academy admits 30 young men and women. These new subalterns come
from all over Qinqe and represent nearly every culture, race and
religion in the republic. Matured in the Academy environment, this
diversity of background helps subalterns grow culturally as well as
academically. The Academy was originally founded in 1996 with a
class of nine students. Enrollment at the Academy now numbers
approximately 100 men and women.
The
mission of the Academy is to educate, guide, and motivate each
individual subaltern to become a leader prepared for a career of
distinction and service to the republic as a professional military
officer in the Qinqean Home Guard.
Subalterns lead the Academy Battalion through their Chain of
Command. Subalterns First Class (fourth year) fulfill roles as
Battalion Commander, Company and Platoon Commanders. Other
Subalterns First Class serve in various staff capacities at the
Battalion, and
Company levels. Subalterns Second Class (third year) serve
as Squad Leaders supervising the lower two classes of subalterns.
Subalterns Third Class (second year) serve as Team Leaders, each
providing personal oversight of one or two Subalterns Fourth Class
(first year).
At a pier alongside the
Academy, is moored the RQS Governor Archer which serves as a seagoing
classroom for approximately 37 subalterns and instructors from the Qinqean Home
Guard Academy. It is on the decks and rigging of the RQS Governor Archer that
the young men and women of the Academy get their first taste of salt air and
life at sea. From this experience they develop a respect for the elements that
will be with them throughout their lifetime. They are tested and challenged,
often to the limits of their endurance. Working aloft they meet fear and learn
to overcome it. The training subalterns receive under way has proven to be an
invaluable asset during their subsequent Qinqean Home Guard careers.
On RQS Governor Archer,
subalterns have a chance to practically apply the
navigation, engineering and other training they receive in classes at the
Academy. As upper-class subalterns, they perform the leadership functions normally
handled by junior officers. As under-class subalterns, they fill positions normally
taken by the enlisted crew of the ship, including helm watch and quartermaster.
All subalterns, no matter what their Home Guard vocation might be, will sail at one time or another
on the RQS Governor Archer.
