Republic of Qinqe

Introduction

top of page

Background:

"In 1494 Qinqe was discovered but not claimed by the Spanish. Qinqe was subsequently held by the French, British and the United States before autonomy was granted in 1980. Independence was attained in 1995. A stable democracy with regular free elections and a positive human rights record, the country has attracted considerable foreign investment and its citizens earn one of the  highest per capita incomes in the Caribbean. Qinqe has prospered through tourism, pharmaceutical production, international banking and investment management. Because of its geography, the country is a major transshipment point for illegal drugs, particularly shipments to the US, and its territory is used for smuggling illegal migrants into the US. Qinqe benefits from extensive petroleum and natural gas fields, mining ranging from coal and iron to gold and silver and a modern and highly developed agricultural system.  It is the source of one of the highest GDPs in the Caribbean."

Republic of Qinqe

Economy

top of page

Economy - overview:

Qinqe has one of the most dynamic economies in the Caribbean region. A diverse industrial sector has surpassed agriculture as the primary locus of economic activity and income. Encouraged by Independance agreement to allow duty-free access to the US until 2050 and by very  progressive tax incentives, US firms continue to invested heavily in Qinqe as they have since the 1960s. Sugar production, while still important, has been eclipsed by dairy production and other livestock products as the main source of income in the agricultural sector. Tourism has traditionally been an important source of income, with estimated arrivals of nearly 2.5 million tourists in 2004. Banking, pharmaxeuticals and the electronics industries are all growing areas of the Qinqean economy.  Prospects for 2001 are clouded by a probable slowing down in both the construction and tourist sectors and by increasing inflation, particularly in energy and food prices. Estimated growth is expected to be be 2%.
