| Old Raw Head In the restive years following the Civil War, highwaymen and bushwhackers terrorized many communities throughout Missouri, destroying property and murdering in cold blood. For some reason, residents of Morgan County seemed especially vulnerable to these depredations and murders. The sound of approaching hoofbeats late night chilled the hearts of the bravest men, for one knew where a roving band would strike next. After that bloody era of Missouri history ended, the ghost of one victim, familiarly called Old Raw Head, was seen in various parts of Morgan County. John A. Hannay spotted the specter one night in a field near Versailles. In straddled a strewstack, its translucent drew near, she saw the bloody stump where its head had been. The ghost slid down the opposite side of the stack and vanished. Hannys Grandparents had seen the same specter many years before. The couple were riding in their wagon on a backcountry road when the headless ghost materialized. It arrowed between the horses, then disappeared, leaving Hannys grandfather perplexed and his grandmother in hysterics (Haunted America) |
