| LOOKING FOR A BODY A puzzled young woman, her dark hair pulled straight back and parted in the middle, stares fixedly through the small window of a Romance language laboratory in the University of Arizonas Modern Language Building. She has a delicate quality about her, heightened by the hand-knit shawl drawn tightly about her shoulders and a long skirt reminiscent of an earlier age. The students who may notice her curiosity and ask if they can be of assistance are startled when she scurries away, raising a thin hand to cover her face with a corner of the shawl. According to those who have seen her, the bewildered lady was the victim of a ghastly murder at the turn of the centry who has returned to claim her earthly remains. The origins of the haunting seem to be wrapped in the assertion that decades ago young woman was killed and her body dumped in a well near what had been the womens atheltic field. The Modern Language Building was built on that site in 1965. Construction workers are said to have found human skeletal remains as they dug the foundation, but didnt report their findings for fear a police investigation would have delayed the project. The recovery of those old bones is the object of the ghosts nightly sojourns. An emeritus professor of English, Byrd Granger, was quoted in the universitys student newspaper as saying the ghost was trying to recover the bones so she can rest. Descriptions of the ghost and her frequent appearances do not vary in detail. She is most often seen between eight P.M. and midnight, usually giong through the south-wing entrances to the building. That portion of the structure apparently cover the old well. Sometimes she actually comes into a room, looks around in vague discomfort and then runs out the door, trying to hide her face from those who may have glimpsed her. At other times she has been spotted gliding down a third-floor hallway, a painfully emaciated shadow in white. The nameless ghost never challenges those around her, shes intent only on somehow reuniting her body and soul. (Haunted America) |
