“What a wonderful woman you were.
You had such a great heart. You
still have, of course. I can hear it
from here. Banging
away.” - Andy to Bel, Moonlight
MOONLIGHT is one
of Harold Pinter’s most recent plays, and certainly one of his most human. Andy, a bedridden civil servant – with his
levelheaded wife Bel at his side --confronts the “new
horizon” of death with dry humor and a defiant curiosity. Beneath the calm, however, we find a haunting
and poetic drama of forgiving – a mother and two sons negotiating the gap
between anger and longing, a daughter spanning the distance between the kitchen
and the grave. MOONLIGHT is a
dreamscape of tangible emotion from the living master of our language.
"There is no playwright his equal...
Pinter works the language as a master pianist works the keyboard. This is
classical playwriting, make no mistake about it."
