Alan Bennett
Alan Bennett began his career in the British  theatre partnering with a young Dudley Moore and Peter Cook in the sketch comedy troupe Beyond the Fringe.  He has gone on to become a highly respected actor, essayist, screenwriter, adaptor, and playwright; The Madness of George III, Forty Years On, and Kafka's Dick are among his plays that enjoyed substantial West End runs.  In Britain, however, he is perhaps best loved for his two series of Talking Heads monologues, written and filmed for the BBC and subsequently staged all over the world.  Maggie Smith, Patricia Routeledge, Lynn Redgrave, Julie Walters, and Eileen Atkins are only a few of the fine actors who have portrayed Bennett's unforgettable characters on stage and screen.  Distilling both tragedy and comedy from the ordinary lives of the people of his native northern England, these short plays are truly the best work of one of the finest writers of his generation.
