For our field visit, we took a trip to Melick's Apple Orchard in Oldwick, NJ. Unfortunately, the trip did not go as planned, but we made the best of it. To make a long story short, we got lost and had a sick child on the bus and got there late Therefore, the owners of the farm were unable to accomodate us for our planned tour. They boxed up our apples and cider and we had to negotiate a simpler visit. We were able to take a hayride around the orchard. During this hayride we observed the apple trees and how the apples hung on the trees. The children also saw many apples on the ground and were very interested in this. After the hayride we took the children through the market so that they could see how the apples were sold and the different products that were made with the apples. Upon returning to school, we sampled our cider and talked about what we saw. Another misfortune was the loss of our digital camera that was being used by a parent during the hayride. It fell out of her pocket and off the tractor without our knowledge. We have yet to hear from the farm on its retrieval. While the trip was not what we had hoped, the children did learn and were able to see a working apple orchard. |
