A Note About Saftey | |||||||||||||||||
| Despite its calm appearence with family campers,gift shops, and ice cream parlors, Door County waters can be DEADLY. Know what you are getting into. Green Bay water has high power boat traffic at times and a Southwest or Northwest wind can easily generate waves up to 5+ feet. Lake Michigan water temps prior to Memorial Day are often only in the low 40'sF and late summer water temps may only reach to the upper 50's. South, Southeast, Northeast and East wind on the lake can generate very large waves. 6+ feet are common. Combined with the many rocky shoals far from shore can make for a sea kayaking nightmare. The sheltered bays are great for kayaking, but if you venture out to the open water, know what to expect beyond the point. SEVERAL SEA KAYAKERS HAVE PERISHED IN RECENT YEARS HERE, and each year a few fishermen die after falling into the water by accident. You and only you are responsable for your own safety. Do not rely on others in a group to rescue you. Know your skills and be able to self rescue in the weather at hand. Check the weather prior to leaving and leave a float plan with someone on shore. Take all recommended safety gear on every trip. Floatation jacket,paddle float,bilge pump, wet suite/drysuite, strobe light, VHF radio, cell phone, paddle buddy etc..If you don't know what to take, click the link below for more references or contact a local outfitter.
