"THE FAMILY: GIFT AND COMMITMENT, HOPE FOR HUMANITY
This theme expresses and condenses some fundamental elements of the family. It opens the mind and heart to broad horizons based on the certainty of the Lord's presence in the domestic Church" (Pontifical Council for the family)
"The Christian Home is the place where children receive the first proclamation of the faith. For this reason the family home is rightly called 'the domestic church,' a community of grace and prayer, a school of human virtues and of Christian charity" (Item 1666)
"The family is the original cell of social life....Authority, stability , and a life of relationships within the family constitute the foundations for freedom, security, and fraternity within society. The family is the community in which, from childhood, one can learn moral values, begin to honour God, and make good use of freedom. Family life is an initiation into life in society." (Item 2207)
"The family should live in such a way that its members learn to care and take responsibility for the young, the old, the sick, the handicapped, and the poor...." (Item 2208)
"The importance of the family for the life and well-being of society entails a particular responsibility for society to support and strengthen marriage and the family. Civil authority should consider it a grave duty 'to acknowledge the true nature of marriage and the family, to protect and foster them, to safeguard public morality, and promote domestic prosperity.' " (Item 2210)
"Socialization also presents dangers. Excessive intervention by the state can threaten personal freedom and initiative. The teaching of the Church has elaborated the principle of subsidiarity, according to which a community of a higher order should not interfere in the internal life of a community of a lower order, depriving the latter of its functions, but rather should support it in case of need and help to co-ordinate its activity with the activities of the rest of society, always with a view to the common good." (Item 1883)
Items from "The Catechism of the Catholic Church", 1994 published by Society of St Paul, PO Box 230, Homebush, NSW, 2140:
The Australian Bishops’ Committee For The Family And For Life "took up the Pope’s challenge that evangelisation should be centered on the family which should be linked to the Jubilee preparations and celebrations." (Committee’s report April 1999)
In pursuing this aim Bishop Morris initiated Family Sunday ’99 in The Toowoomba Diocese. This was a precursor for Family Sunday 2000 (see below).
Family resource kits have also been made available to help families in the diocese to know and to live their faith. Resources include ‘Family Time’. This outlines a series of practical steps to develop and live our faith in every day situations. A good follow up for families whose children have just received one of the sacraments. There are many other resources available to assist Catholic families to learn and live their faith. Families or groups of families wishing to use these resources should contact The Family Bookshop (502 Ruthven St – Ph 46384649) or make a request through their parish priest.
Centacare also provides resources and assistance to families throughout the diocese. Centacare staff are working with the Bishop’s Committee to prepare a series of workshops in the Jubilee year. These workshops will be developed to assist parents to accept and fulfil their roles as Christian parents in a modern world.
The following documents are a few of the great references for Catholic Families on the Vatican Website:
National Gathering of Families 28th - 30th April 2000 in Melbourne
Under the theme of 'Family. Dare to Dream' a number of presentations and workshops will be conducted to evangelise to and through the Family. Organisers are catering to families with children's activities and (where possible) billeting of visiting families. Conference fees will be met by the Diocese for at least one family to represent Toowoomba Diocese at this gathering.
Each Parish is also encouraged to support a family wishing to attend this gathering. Contact the Bishop's office for more details.
Family Sunday - 15th October 2000
Toowoomba Diocese will be a part of this world wide celebration of families. Planning is underway and details should be available soon.
