On the contrary it has been fraught by intense rivalry between competing states and this has erupted into a series of violent wars

وعانت من ضغوط غير مسبوقة في التاريخ بسبب الزيادة السكانية في ظروف حراك اجتماعي آخذ في التوسع باطراد  

it has experienced unprecedented pressures from increasing population in conditions of expanding social mobility

وواجهت كذلك تحولات عميقة في الثقافة والتوجهات والتطلعات العامة  

and it has undergone profound changes of culture orientation and aspirations

ومع هذا فإنها حقبة تقتضي تفسيرا تاريخيا، نظرا لما تتصف به من قسمات كثيرة فريدة  

Nevertheless it is a period which calls for historical explanation because it has so many unique features

وحيث إنها حقبة صاغت معالم وشكل المجتمع المعاصر

and as it is the period which has shaped contemporary society  

وبدأ على الفور فرض ضوابط صارمة على الكيماويات الخطرة التي لفتت كارسون إليها الأنظار

tight controls have since been placed on the dangerous chemicals to which she drew attention

قالت لي صديقتي إن استقلالها اليوم عن زوجها يناسبها تماما، وإنها سعيدة لأنها أصبحت تملك قرارها  

she was saying that her independence was appealing to her that she was happy to be on her own

وقالت: "وها أنا اليوم لم أعد أفكر فيه على الإطلاق، ولم يعد يهمني حقا  

"I just don't think about him anymore-I really don't care " she said

لكنها حين نطقت بهذه الجملة اغرورقت عيناها بالدموع

But as she said it her eyes momentarily welled up with tears

لكن التعاطف مع إنسان تدمع عيونه، يعني أن هذا الإنسان حزين  

But the empathic understanding that someone's watering eyes means she is sad  

ولكن جدير بنا الاحتفاظ بها كفئات مستقلة منفصلة، وذلك لأنها تذكر المؤرخ بالحاجة إلى النظر إلى ما وراء الوثائق  

But it is worth retaining them as separate categories because they remind the historian to look beyond the documents

والمألوف عادة في حديثنا اليومي أن نستخدم عبارة العلم والتكنولوجيا وكأنهما اسمان مترادفان عمليا

In current usage it is common to speak of `science and technology' as if they were virtually synonymous

وهذا تصور مضلل نظرا لأن كلا من الاسمين يمثل شيئا متمايزا عن الآخر

This however is misleading because they represent different entities  

والملاحظ أن البشر قد يشرعون في صنع وعمل أشياء وهم لا يعرفون ولزمن طويل سوى تفسيرات بدائية وجزئية عن الخامات المتاحة لهم  

Human beings could begin to make and do things long before they had more than the most partial and primitive explanations of the materials at their disposal  

ولكننا نعرف أنها كانت ذات أهمية فاصلة، لأنها مكنت الإنسان من أن يكون له تأثيره المؤكد والمتزايد في بيئته، ومن ثم القدرة على التحكم فيها عمليا  

but their significance was momentous because they made it possible for men and women to assert an increasing impact on and eventually a control over their environment  

مما يبرر لنا دراسة تاريخ التكنولوجيا باعتباره دراسة متمايزة على تاريخ العلم  

so that we are justified in studying the history of technology as something quite distinct from the history of science

ونحن لا نعرف عمليا شيئا عن ظروف هذه الابتكارات  

We know virtually nothing about the circumstances of these inventions

وسوف نحاول في هذا الفصل من الكتاب أن نتأمل عن قرب أكثر، عملية الثورة التكنولوجية

In this chapter we will look more closely at this process of technological revolution  

فسوف نجد لزاما علينا الاهتمام بالابتكارات الناجحة دون الفاشلة  

we will inevitably be mainly concerned with successful rather than with failed inventions

But we will have cause to consider some of them as stimuli to more successful ideas

But it is the amygdala that adds you don't really like her

It tells you nothing about how they react to the vicissitudes of life

"What do you call a nerd fifteen years from now

وعديد من القدرات المختلفة التي ستساعدنا على تحقيق ذلك  

and many many different abilities that will help you get there
