ومن ثم لنا الحق في النظر إليها باعتبارها مجموعة من الحضارات المختلفة لولا هذا التجانس الثقافي المذهل الذي بقي واطرد على مدى هذه الحقبة  

so that it would be reasonable to regard it as a set of different civilizations if it were not for the striking cultural uniformity maintained over this period  

بحيث إن التمييز بين عصر للحديد قديم وآخر حديث ليس له دلالة أو أهمية في الصين

so that the distinction between an Old' and a New' Iron Age has no significance in China

ولعل أفضل تفسير لهذا النمط التطوري القول إن المجتمع الصيني في مجمله ظل خاضعا على مدى الثلاثة آلاف عام لسلطة الماندارين أو طبقة كبار الموظفين. ويمثل هؤلاء أرستقراطية مثقفة لا تتوارث السلطة  

The best explanation of this evolutionary pattern is probably that the whole of Chinese society was dominated throughout three millennia by the mandarins - a non-hereditary intellectual aristocracy  

شريطة أن تخدم هدفا يفيد هذه الطبقة، كما يمكن أن يتمثله النظام الاجتماعي القائم بسهولة

provided that they performed a purpose which was useful to the mandarins and could be easily assimilated into the existing social order

ونذكر هنا واحدا من أكثر العقول الإبداعية التي عرفتها الحضارة الغربية، ونعني به ليوناردو دافنشي  

One of the most inventive minds of Western Civilization was that of Leonardo da Vinci  

الأمر الذي يعتبر دافعا للحيلولة دون تطوير واستحداث آلات تسهل الأعمال الروتينية المعتادة.  

and thus provides a positive disincentive to developing machines which could make routine labour easier  

ومات ثم فإن مجمل سرعة التقدم التقني كانت أكبر كثيرا مما كانت عليه في ثورة العصر الحجري الحديث أو العصر الحجري القديم السابق عليه  

so that the overall pace of technological advance was manifestly greater than it had been during the Neolithic Revolution or the Old Stone Age which preceded it  

إن جميع الحضارات قائمة على نظام متطور من خلق الثروات التي يمكن لها أن تكفل إنتاج وتوزيع الغذاء وغيره من ضرورات الحياة  

All civilizations are built upon a well-developed system of wealth creation which can ensure the production and distribution of food and other essentials of life

والملاحظ أن غالبية المجتمعات البشرية كانت منذ الألف الرابع قبل الميلاد تمثل جزءا من هذه الحضارة أو تلك، من الحضارات التي ازدهرت آنذاك  

Most human societies since the fourth millennium BC have been part of one or other of the civilizations which have flourished since then  

ونعني بذلك الحضارة الغربية التي كانت لها ريادة التقدم التكنولوجي العالمي على مدى الألف سنة الأخيرة  

This is the Western Civilization which has taken the lead in world technological development over the last millennium  

وأيما تكن القوة التي تتصدر السباق فإنها تكون مؤهلة لأن تظل في الصدارة

Whichever pulls ahead is apt to stay ahead  

ولكن أيا ما كان الطريق الذي يتم انتهاجه  

But whichever of these ways was taken

إذ له أن يطلب أي عدد يشاء من الفتاوي وأن يعمل بأي منها  

for he may solicit as many opinions as he wishes and may follow whichever he chooses

وإنما الجيش الذي يزحف إلى المعركة أمضى عزما وأقوى روحا  

but whichever army goes into battle stronger in soul  

إذ لكي نبرر الإنتاج الكبير كان لابد أن تصبح السيارة في حدود الإمكانات المالية للناس الذين صنعوها والذين يؤلفون هم وأترابهم في الصناعات الأخرى السوق المحتملة

in order to justify mass production the automobile had to come within the financial reach of the people who made it and who with their peers in other industries comprised the potential mass market

خبرة أجيال عدة من الملاحين الجويين الذين اقتفوا أثر النجاح الذي حققه الأخوان مونتجولفاير في التحليق بالبالونات منذ العام 1783 (من الأهمية بمكان هنا ذكر أن كلا من البالونات التي تدار بالهواء الساخن والبالونات الممتلئة بالغاز إنما استلهمت البحوث العلمية المعاصرة بشأن تكوين الغلاف الغازي للكرة الأرضية والغازات المختلطة به

وأُكدت تنبؤات ماكسويل العام 1885 بفضل تجارب الأستاذ الألماني هيرتس الذي أنتج تيارا كهـربائيا داخل دائرة توالفت مع دائرة إرسال وإن كانتا منفصلتين  

Maxwell's deductions were confirmed in 1885 by the experiments of the German Professor Hertz who produced an electric current in a circuit tuned to but separate from a `transmitting' circuit

وكان المخترع صاحب الإنتاج الغزير توماس ألفا إديسون أول من وضع تصميما لطريقة تسجيل الصوت  

It was that prolific inventor Thomas Alva Edison who first devised a way of recording sound  

وكان لمغن آخر عادة إثارة البلبلة والارتباك لدى البطلة التي يغني معها لحنا ثنائيا
