but eventually seemed to be working smoothly and performing a valuable task as a work-horse ferrying satellites and equipment into space until the catastrophic accident on 28 January 1986 when the shuttle Challenger blew up shortly after launch with the loss of her crew of seven  

وتعتبر العالمة الأمريكية راشيل كارسون من أوائل من نبّهوا الرأي العام إلى هذه الأخطار وذلك في كتابها المستقبلي الربيع الصامت الصادر العام 1962  

One of the first persons to alert public opinion to these anxieties was the American scientist Rachel Carson who published her seminal book Silent Spring in 1962

Two centuries later the Scottish craftsman James Watt might have had a similar experience with his brilliant ideas for a new type of steam engine  

وهكذا، فإن الحضارة الغربية وحدها، دون الثقافات الدنيوية الأخرى، أصبحت لها سطوة وسلطان على جيرانها وعلى بيئتها بفضل الاستخدام الجاد والنشط لتكنولوجيا دينامية، شجعت على تطورها ظروف اجتماعية توافرت في كل بلد من بلدان الغرب  

Alone amongst terrestrial cultures therefore Western Civilization has achieved power over its neighbors and over its environment by the strenuous application of a dynamic technology which has been encouraged to develop by the social conditions within its member states  

وإذا شئنا الدقة - خاصة أن اللغة الإنجليزية نادرا ما تستخدم بمثل هذا التحديد الدقيق في هذه النقطة - فإننا نقول إن التكنولوجيا ليست معنية بامتلاك ناحية التقنيات التي هي موضوع دراستها  

Strictly speaking - and the English language is rarely used with such precision on this point - technology is not concerned with the mastery of the techniques which are the subjects of its study

and reviewing the way in which these factors have operated in our society over the last three centuries  

إذ تستخدمه أداة للتكهن بالتطورات المستقبلية. ويكفينا هنا، وفاء لأهدافنا، أن نمايز العوامل التي يتكرر ظهورها دائما وبانتظام على مدى عمليتي الابتكار والتجديد  

It is enough for our purposes to distinguish the factors which recur consistently and regularly in the course of invention and innovation

Although this is an over-colorful expression it serves to draw our attention to the social ramifications of technological change

In terms of increasing their wealth-producing capacity the modern descendants of all these great civilizations have found it necessary to turn to Western Civilization for guidance and inspiration

the development of a spirit of scientific inquiry devoted to discovering more about the nature of human beings in their environment

their ramifications and the reasons for their decline  

ومن ثم فإن التكنولوجيا معنية بفهم التقنيات داخل البيئة التي شهدت نموها اجتماعيا  

Technology is concerned with understanding techniques within the environment of their social development  

ومنذ أن استحدثت الحضارات النهرية المفهوم الثقافي القائل بأن أضخم مبنى في مجتمع ما هو الذي ينم عن أهداف ذلك المجتمع وغاياته  

Ever since the riverine civilizations developed the cultural notion that the biggest building said what your society was all about  

فحين يعرف الإنسان بقلبه أن هذا الشيء صحيح، فهذا أمر يختلف عن الاقتناع - نوع من المعرفة أعمق من اليقين، وأكثر من الفكر فيه بالعقل المنطقي  

knowing something is right "in your heart" is a different order of conviction-somehow a deeper kind of certainty-than thinking so with your rational mind  

فالاستثمار في مستويات أعلى من الخصوبة يكون أشد إغراء، عندما يكون المالك أو ورثته هم الذين سيجنون ثمارها  

investment in higher fertility levels is more attractive when you or your descendants will inherit the benefits

that the most effective distractions are ones that will shift your mood-an exciting sporting event
