على كل ما قدمته لي من عون ومساندة في سبيل إنجاز وتنفيذ فكرة هذا الكتاب على مدى سنوات

وسبق أن أهديتها في العام 1965 كتابي الأول التكنولوجيا والتقدم الاجتماعي

I dedicated my first book Technology and Social Progress to her in 1965  

ولهذا فإنني أهديها كتابي هذا مع عرفان عميق بالجميل  

So it is with deep gratitude that I dedicate this book to her  

قالت لي صديقتي إن استقلالها اليوم عن زوجها يناسبها تماما، وإنها سعيدة لأنها أصبحت تملك قرارها  

she was saying that her independence was appealing to her that she was happy to be on her own  

لكنها حين نطقت بهذه الجملة اغرورقت عيناها بالدموع  

But as she said it her eyes momentarily welled up with tears

ولكنه يقينا وصف لنا كيف واتته فكرة إنشاء مكثف منفصل وكأنها ومضة أشرقت بينما كان يسير الهوينى بعد ظهر يوم من أيام السبت في حديقة جامعة جلاسجو. وهذه هي الفكرة التي أحدثت تغييرا ثوريا في الآلة البخارية القديمة الفجة

but he did describe how the idea for the separate condenser which revolutionized the clumsy old atmospheric steam engine came to him in a flash as he strolled on the Green of Glasgow University one sabbath afternoon

ونذكر من بينها أيضا وجود مجتمع متسامح وقابل لأن يمنح المبتكر جوائز أخرى في صورة ترق اجتماعي وتقدير عام  

and a society which is sufficiently open to allow him other rewards in terms of upward social mobility and public esteem  

فإن نجاح سافيري في الحصول على براءة اختراع جعل من الكياسة أن يعمل نيوكومن على الاتفاق معه  

Savery's success in acquiring a patent made it diplomatic for Newcomen to come to terms with him

واقتدى به كثيرون ممن أصبحوا مهندسين متخصصين في هندسة القنوات المائية  

Many followed him in becoming canal engineers  

واخترع في. بولسين العام 1889 طريقة لاستخدام تيار كهربائي ناتج عن الصوت لمغنطة شريط من الصلب، وأطلق عليه اسم التلغرافون Telegraphone  

A method of using an electric current produced by sound to magnetize a steel tape was invented by V Poulsen in 1889 and named by him a `telegraphone'  

ومع هذا فإنها حقبة تقتضي تفسيرا تاريخيا، نظرا لما تتصف به من قسمات كثيرة فريدة  

Nevertheless it is a period which calls for historical explanation because it has so many unique features

وحيث إنها حقبة صاغت معالم وشكل المجتمع المعاصر  

and as it is the period which has shaped contemporary society  

بمعنى أنها تهدف إلى تفسيرها داخل سياق اجتماعي  

it aims at interpreting them within a social context

يترتب على هذا أن التكنولوجيا دراسة إنسانية ودراسة اجتماعية

From this it follows that technology is a humanistic study and a social study  

وذلك لأنها تعالج أشكالا وصورا مميزة للسلوك البشري في المجتمع

because it deals with specific forms of human behavior in society  

وأتوجه بالشكر أيضا إلى جميع من أذنوا لي باستنساخ الصور الفوتوغرافية المبينة في قائمة الرسوم والجداول

Many such apparently simple observations - except that nobody had the initiative to act on them before - have led to momentous inventions

إذ لابد أن يكون المهندس القائم بالتصميم راضيا، لأن هذا الابتكار أو ذاك يعطي إحساسا بأنه صواب

the engineer who designed them must be satisfied that they `feel' right

ويمكن القول أيضا كحجة إضافية، إن امتلاك العبيد فرض التزاما بضرورة إيجاد عمل لهم يشغلهم حتى ولو على سبيل إبعادهم عن التفكير في أي إجراءات تضر بالمجتمع  

Moreover it can be argued that the possession of slaves imposes an obligation to find work to keep them busy if only to keep them out of mischief  

ولكن قبل الشروع في دراسة التكنولوجيا في العالم الحديث لنحاول الرجوع معا إلى البداية

Before embarking on an examination of technology in the modern world however let us go back to the beginning

عبارة عن مشاعر تتحرك بداخلنا لا تتخطى دائما عتبة الوعي  

feelings that stir within us do not always cross the thresh- old into awareness

كانت الزراعة التي أخذ بها من النوع المتنقل ( ويألفها معظمنا اليوم في أشكالها المدارية الأحدث) حيث كانت تزال أشجار بقعة من الغابة وتحرق  

the form of agriculture adopted was that of shifting cultivation (now most familiar to most of us in its recent tropical forms) where a plot was cleared and the slash burned  

وهذه الحقيقة هي التي تبرر لنا أن نركز انتباهنا بشكل خاص على ظاهرة الثورة التكنولوجية

It is this fact that justifies us in focusing particular attention on the phenomenon of technological revolution

وليسمح لنا القارئ بأن نوجز هنا رؤيتنا التي عرضناها في هذا الفصل
