يصبح لزاما أن نضع في الاعتبار واقع أن الابتكارات في المجتمعات المتمدنة في الأقل انتقلت لأسباب عدة ومتباينة- وهو ما يمكن أن نسميه آليات الانتقال

therefore it is necessary to take account of the fact that in civilized societies at least inventions are readily transmitted by various means - by what may be called the `mechanisms of transmission'  

وأكثر من هذا أن مجرد نموذج كامل للمنتج الصناعي يكون كافيا ليعرف منه الصانع الذكي ما الذي يحتاج إليه لكي يحاكيه ويصنع مثيلا له  

Sometimes even a model of the full-scale artifact is sufficient to inform an intelligent craftsman of what he needs to do to make a copy  

وهذا هو ما أطلق عليه فرلد كوتريل اسم مجتمع الطاقة المنخفضة Low-energy society المستخدمة في جميع الأغراض العملية

For all practical purposes this was what Fred Cottrell has called a `low-energy society'  

وأثبتت في الأقل ما يمكن أن يتحقق بفضل زيادة الإنتاجية والثروة  

not least because they demonstrated what could be achieved in terms of increased productivity and wealth creation  

إذ استحدثت هذه الحضارة تقاليد ثقافية غنية وذات عمق فلسفي كثيرا ما افتقدها الغرب  

developed rich cultural traditions with a philosophical profundity which was often lacking in the West  

بيد أنها لم تعول كثيرا على الأداء التقني  

but which placed little reliance on technical performance  

وهكذا، فإن الحضارة الغربية وحدها، دون الثقافات الدنيوية الأخرى، أصبحت لها سطوة وسلطان على جيرانها وعلى بيئتها بفضل الاستخدام الجاد والنشط لتكنولوجيا دينامية، شجعت على تطورها ظروف اجتماعية توافرت في كل بلد من بلدان الغرب  

Alone amongst terrestrial cultures therefore Western Civilization has achieved power over its neighbours and over its environment by the strenuous application of a dynamic technology which has been encouraged to develop by the social conditions within its member states

ومع هذا فإنها حقبة تقتضي تفسيرا تاريخيا، نظرا لما تتصف به من قسمات كثيرة فريدة  

Nevertheless it is a period which calls for historical explanation because it has so many unique features  

وحيث إنها حقبة صاغت معالم وشكل المجتمع المعاصر  

and as it is the period which has shaped contemporary society  

واستطاع بولتون أن يوفر له رأس المال اللازم والآلات والصناع الحرفيين المدربين. وهكذا تهيأت كل الضرورات اللازمة لكي يحول وات أفكاره إلى منتجات صناعية ناجحة.  

who could supply the capital the machinery and the skilled craftsmen required to convert Watt's ideas into successful artifacts  

إذ لابد أن يكون المهندس القائم بالتصميم راضيا، لأن هذا الابتكار أو ذاك يعطي إحساسا بأنه صواب

the engineer who designed them must be satisfied that they `feel' right  

ولهذا فإن أصحاب هذه الحجة افترضوا أن هذه الأطلال أقيمت تحت إشراف وتوجيه حرفيين مهرة، استجلبوا المهارات اللازمة من حضارات شرق المتوسط

It is supposed therefore by those who adopt this argument that Stonehenge was built under the guidance of master craftsmen who had brought the necessary skills from Eastern Mediterranean civilizations  

خاصة أن الروايات التاريخية التقليدية تميل إلى تأكيد أنشطة عدد قليل من التجار والإرساليات التبشيرية والجنود المغامرين السياسيين وأمثالهم، الذين اعتادوا التنقل بحرية  

particularly as traditional historical accounts tend to emphasize the activities of the few - merchants missionaries soldiers sailors political adventurers and such like - who did move comparatively freely  

وهيأت السيارة قدرة غيرمسبوقة على انتقال الرجال والنساء وبذا أصبح بإمكانهم اختيار المكان الذي يسكنون فيه بعيدا عن مكان العمل، ويقطعون رحلة العمل يوميا بسياراتهم  

At the same time the automobile has given an unprecedented mobility to ordinary men and women who can now choose to live at some distance from their place of work and to commute in their motor cars  

ويمارسون سلطة وقوة عظيمتين باسم الإمبراطور الذي عهد إليهم بهما للعمل في خدمته

and wielding enormous power and authority in the name of the emperor whom it existed to serve  

وكان هذا أمرا مهما فيما بين الأطفال إذ أدى إلى انخفاض نسبة الوفيات بينهم، أي زاد عدد من يبقون منهم على قيد الحياة، وأصبح هذا تعزيزا إضافيا للأجيال التالية من السكان  

This was especially important amongst children a greater proportion of whom survived to maturity and thus boosted the next generation of the population
