لذلك فإن ما نريد أن نشير إليه هو أن التجديد التكنولوجي ينزع إلى تغيير العلاقات القائمة

What we are suggesting therefore is that technological innovation tends to change existing relationships  

وبذا يحول الماكينة التي كانت تعمل بحركة واحدة إلى ماكينة مزدوجة الحركة  

converting what had previously been a single-acting machine into a double-acting one  

وأصبح السكان بعامة يعتمدون أكثر فأكثر على ما ينتجونه  

the general population came to depend more and more on what they produced

hunter-gatherers were confined to what are usually termed 'marginal environments'

إذ استحدثت هذه الحضارة تقاليد ثقافية غنية وذات عمق فلسفي كثيرا ما افتقدها الغرب  

developed rich cultural traditions with a philosophical profundity which was often lacking in the West  

بيد أنها لم تعول كثيرا على الأداء التقني  

but which placed little reliance on technical performance

وهكذا، فإن الحضارة الغربية وحدها، دون الثقافات الدنيوية الأخرى، أصبحت لها سطوة وسلطان على جيرانها وعلى بيئتها بفضل الاستخدام الجاد والنشط لتكنولوجيا دينامية، شجعت على تطورها ظروف اجتماعية توافرت في كل بلد من بلدان الغرب  

Alone amongst terrestrial cultures therefore Western Civilization has achieved power over its neighbors and over its environment by the strenuous application of a dynamic technology which has been encouraged to develop by the social conditions within its member states

ومع هذا فإنها حقبة تقتضي تفسيرا تاريخيا، نظرا لما تتصف به من قسمات كثيرة فريدة  

Nevertheless it is a period which calls for historical explanation because it has so many unique features  

وحيث إنها حقبة صاغت معالم وشكل المجتمع المعاصر  

and as it is the period which has shaped contemporary society  

وإن دراسة الثورة التكنولوجية التي سادت الحضارة الغربية منذ العام 1700، يمكن أن تسهم في فهم الحالة الاستثنائية المشحونة بالمخاطر والاحتمالات  

Study of the technological revolution which has dominated Western Civilization since 1700 can thus contribute to an understanding of the extraordinary situation full of dangers and potentialities
