بحيث يمكن لأي تجديد أن يدخل بسهولة ويسر ضمن نسيج المجتمع

إذ حدث التغير حيثما- وفقط حيثما- توافرت مجموعة المتطلبات والموارد والمشروع الاقتصادي  

Each development has occurred where - and only where - the necessary combination of needs resources and enterprise have been present

مناطق حضرية تضخمت وتلاحمت مع بعضها وكأنها مجمع مدن

وذلك لسبب بشري أساسا وهو أن التطورات التكنولوجية تتفاعل بعضها مع بعض على نحو مغاير تماما لما يحدت من تفاعل بين الأنواع النباتية والبيولوجية

for the intensely human reason that technological developments interact with each other in a way which botanical and biological species never do  

وبدلا منها مازلنا نخضع كل فرد إلى نوع من الدراسة إذا نجح فيها  

Instead we subject everyone to an education where if you succeed

كما أننا نكتفي بتقييم كل فرد وفقا لما حققه في مسيرة حياته بهذا المستوى "المحدود من النجاح  

And we evaluate everyone along the way according to whether they meet that narrow standard of success

ولم يتفق الجميع مع هذه المقدمة الفلسفية التي تقول بضرورة تغيير الحالة المزاجية السيئة  

2 Not everyone agrees with the philosophical premise that bad moods should be changed

وهي موضع شكوى ممن يشعرون بأنهم تحت رحمة حالتهم النفسية هذه  

most everyone complained of being at the mercy of their moods

هي المحافظة على قدرة الفرد على عقد العلاقة الاجتماعية بسهولة  

is to keep everyone involved in a social exchange at ease  

وليس فيما نقول محاولة لإحياء نهج بال يعتمد على تفسير كل ظواهر التاريخ الحديث في ضوء علة واحدة  

This is not an attempt to revive a discredited monocausal explanation for everything that has happened in modern history

وأضافا شيئا مميزا ومختلفا عن أي شيء آخر لم يحدث من قبل

Nevertheless it is a period which calls for historical explanation because it has so many unique features

Human beings acquired their first techniques of tool-making and the control of fire over many millennia in the course of the last two or three million years  

بيد أننا إذا ما نظرنا إلى الحاجات الاجتماعية الكثيرة، الضاغطة في عالم اليوم والتي لاقت استجابة ابتكارية ناجحة  

The Process of Technological revolution But when we regard the many pressing social needs in the world today to which there has been no successful inventive response

but none the less serviceable for that
