ومن ثم فإن المحدثين من أبناء هذه الحضارات العظيمة وجدوا أنه من الضروري ابتغاء زيادة قدراتهم على إنتاج الثروة، أن يتجهوا إلى الحضارة الغربية يستوحونها ويسترشدون بها  

In terms of increasing their wealth-producing capacity the modern descendants of all these great civilizations have found it necessary to turn to Western Civilization for guidance and inspiration

وهكذا، فإن الحضارة الغربية وحدها، دون الثقافات الدنيوية الأخرى، أصبحت لها سطوة وسلطان على جيرانها وعلى بيئتها بفضل الاستخدام الجاد والنشط لتكنولوجيا دينامية، شجعت على تطورها ظروف اجتماعية توافرت في كل بلد من بلدان الغرب  

Alone amongst terrestrial cultures therefore Western Civilization has achieved power over its neighbours and over its environment by the strenuous application of a dynamic technology which has been encouraged to develop by the social conditions within its member states  

وكانت هذه عنصرا فاعلا ومثيرا للتصدع الاجتماعي والمنافسة الحادة  

causing a ferment of social disruption and acute internal rivalry  

وإنما كانت على العكس زاخرة ومشحونة بالغيرة الحادة بين الدول المتنافسة. وتفجر هذا كله في صورة سلسلة من الحروب العنيفة  

On the contrary it has been fraught by intense rivalry between competing states and this has erupted into a series of violent wars  

وواجهت كذلك تحولات عميقة في الثقافة والتوجهات والتطلعات العامة  

and it has undergone profound changes of culture orientation and aspirations  

يترتب على هذا أن التكنولوجيا دراسة إنسانية ودراسة اجتماعية  

From this it follows that technology is a humanistic study and a social study

ومن ثم فإن عبارة تاريخ التكنولوجيا تمثل توسعا لازما لنطاق بحث ودراسة التكنولوجيا  

so that the term `history of technology' represents a necessary extension of the investigation of technology

ذلك لأن النوع البشري هو تلك المتوالية من الأنواع التي بلغت ذروتها في صورة الإنسان العاقل Homo Sapiens  

because humankind is that series of species culminating in Hoino a sapiens  

بيد أننا سنعرض التقدم التكنولوجي الفريد الذي طرأ خلال هذه القرون الثلاثة. في إطار العلاقات النسبية الصحيحة إذا ما سلمنا منذ البداية بأن الدراسة ذات بعد له تاريخ قديم عريق للغاية  

but it will help to keep the extraordinary technological progress of these centuries in perspective if we recognize at the outset that the study has a dimension of profound antiquity  

ومن ثم يمكن القول إن التكنولوجيا ليست مجرد نتاج للمجتمع الصناعي الحديث  

Technology that is to say is not merely a product of modern industrial society  

ومن ثم فإن المحدثين من أبناء هذه الحضارات العظيمة وجدوا أنه من الضروري ابتغاء زيادة قدراتهم على إنتاج الثروة، أن يتجهوا إلى الحضارة الغربية يستوحونها ويسترشدون بها

The history of these species over the last two or three million years is thus properly a field of interest to the historian of technology

In particular it has become customary to limit the scope of technology to those techniques concerned with harnessing or generating power together with the productive and manufacturing techniques and the constructional transport and communication techniques to which this power is applied

وتعتبر هذه الوسائل ذات أهمية خاصة بالنسبة لأحقاب التاريخ البشري التي توصف خطأ بعبارة ما قبل التاريخ  

It is particularly important for those periods of human history to which the misnomer `prehistory'  

ولكنها مهمة أيضا لبعض أوجه التاريخ المسجل والتي أولاها المؤرخون التقليديون أوفى اهتمام  

It is also important however for those aspects of recorded history which have tended to receive least attention from traditional chroniclers

كان البشر - على خلاف الأنواع الأخرى التي تتمتع بمهارات غريزية عالية القدر، بل وعلى شاكلة الرئيسات الراقية التي تتمتع بقدرة على تشكيل أداة صغيرة تقتضيها مناسبة عابرة - مضطرين إلى تعلم مهاراتهم المكتسبة. وتضمن هذا براعة في نقل هذه المهارات من جيل إلى جيل  

Unlike other species which possess a high degree of instinctual skill or even like those higher primates which are capable of forming a simple tool when an occasion requires it human beings have had to learn their skills and this has implied a facility for passing them on from one generation to the next  

ويمكن أن نقول الشيء نفسه عن الحضارات الهندية، التي حفزتها العقيدة الهندوسية أو البوذية  

Much the same could be said of those Indian civilizations which inspired by Hinduism or Buddhism  

ويبدو لنا أن عصر الحديد بدأ خارج مراكز الحضارة السابقة حيث توجد الآن آسيا الوسطى. وقد ظهر حوالي العام الألف ق. م. وتميز باختراع تقنيات تشكيل خام الحديد  

The Iron Age appears to have begun outside the earlier centers of civilization in what is now Asia Minor round about 1000 BC and was distinguished by the invention of techniques for working iron ore

وطبيعي أن المشكلة حين تكون مشكلة غير مألوفة فسوف يكون عسيرا أن تحدد بالضبط أي الاستعدادات هي الأكثر ملاءمة، بحيث تقود الباحث إلى الحل الصحيح  

Of course when the problem is unfamiliar it is difficult to know exactly what preparation will be most conducive to its solution

It is worth pausing to make sure we understand what we are talking about

What is now beyond reasonable historical doubt is the fact that Europe was powerfully stimulated by Chinese technological superiority during the Middle Ages
