ومن ثم فإن المحدثين من أبناء هذه الحضارات العظيمة وجدوا أنه من الضروري ابتغاء زيادة قدراتهم على إنتاج الثروة، أن يتجهوا إلى الحضارة الغربية يستوحونها ويسترشدون بها  

In terms of increasing their wealth-producing capacity the modern descendants of all these great civilizations have found it necessary to turn to Western Civilization for guidance and inspiration  

وهكذا، فإن الحضارة الغربية وحدها، دون الثقافات الدنيوية الأخرى، أصبحت لها سطوة وسلطان على جيرانها وعلى بيئتها بفضل الاستخدام الجاد والنشط لتكنولوجيا دينامية، شجعت على تطورها ظروف اجتماعية توافرت في كل بلد من بلدان الغرب

Alone amongst terrestrial cultures therefore Western Civilization has achieved power over its neighbours and over its environment by the strenuous application of a dynamic technology which has been encouraged to develop by the social conditions within its member states  

وكانت هذه عنصرا فاعلا ومثيرا للتصدع الاجتماعي والمنافسة الحادة

causing a ferment of social disruption and acute internal rivalry

وإنما كانت على العكس زاخرة ومشحونة بالغيرة الحادة بين الدول المتنافسة. وتفجر هذا كله في صورة سلسلة من الحروب العنيفة  

On the contrary it has been fraught by intense rivalry between competing states and this has erupted into a series of violent wars  

وواجهت كذلك تحولات عميقة في الثقافة والتوجهات والتطلعات العامة

and it has undergone profound changes of culture orientation and aspirations  

وحيث إنها حقبة صاغت معالم وشكل المجتمع المعاصر

and as it is the period which has shaped contemporary society  

وإن دراسة الثورة التكنولوجية التي سادت الحضارة الغربية منذ العام 1700، يمكن أن تسهم في فهم الحالة الاستثنائية المشحونة بالمخاطر والاحتمالات

Study of the technological revolution which has dominated Western Civilization since 1700 can thus contribute to an understanding of the extraordinary situation full of dangers and potentialities

ن من أهم العوامل ابتكار الزراعة المنظمة التي هيأت إمكان قيام المجتمع المستقر، وخلقت إمكانا للتوسع السكاني  

Amongst the more important factors have been the invention of systematic agriculture making possible a settled society and creating the potential for an expansion of population  

بيد أنها لم تعول كثيرا على الأداء التقني  

but which placed little reliance on technical performance  

بيد أننا سنعرض التقدم التكنولوجي الفريد الذي طرأ خلال هذه القرون الثلاثة. في إطار العلاقات النسبية الصحيحة إذا ما سلمنا منذ البداية بأن الدراسة ذات بعد له تاريخ قديم عريق للغاية  

but it will help to keep the extraordinary technological progress of these centuries in perspective if we recognize at the outset that the study has a dimension of profound antiquity  

بيد أن هذا الموضوع ذاته له أوجه عدة  

but this itself is a subject of many facets  

ولكنها جميعها تخضع لاختبار الدقة والمصداقية وبيان الدلالة والأهمية

but all of which are subject to testing for accuracy reliability and significance

ولكن جدير بنا الاحتفاظ بها كفئات مستقلة منفصلة، وذلك لأنها تذكر المؤرخ بالحاجة إلى النظر إلى ما وراء الوثائق  

But it is worth retaining them as separate categories because they remind the historian to look beyond the documents  

إن ظل الهدف هو ذاته دائما: النفاذ إلى حقائق الكون الذي تشكل البشرية جزءا منه  

but the objective itself has remained the same - to penetrate the realities of the cosmos of which humankind is a part  

ولكننا نعرف أنها كانت ذات أهمية فاصلة، لأنهامكنت الإنسان من أن يكون له تأثيره المؤكد والمتزايد في بيئته، ومن ثم القدرة على التحكم فيها عمليا

but their significance was momentous because they made it possible for men and women to assert an increasing impact on and eventually a control over their environment

ومن ثم استطاع الناس ببطء ولكن بقدر من اليقين أن يحصلوا على الأدوات التي هيأت لهم قدرة على فرض أنفسهم على العالم من حولهم

Slowly therefore but none the less surely people acquired the tools which enabled them to impose themselves on the world around them

ولكن بعض المعادن الأخرى ذات الفائدة العامة مثل القصدير اللازم لصناعة البرونز (الذي هو مزيج من النحاس والقصدير)، كان من الصعوبة الحصول عليها في منطقة شرق المتوسط، ومن ثم كان لزاما البحث عنها في أماكن أخرى بعيدة

but some more generally useful metals like tin essential for the manufacture of bronze (an alloy of copper and tin) were difficult to find around the eastern Mediterranean and had to be sought at a distance  

ومن ثم فإن المحدثين من أبناء هذه الحضارات العظيمة وجدوا أنه من الضروري ابتغاء زيادة قدراتهم على إنتاج الثروة، أن يتجهوا إلى الحضارة الغربية يستوحونها ويسترشدون بها

ومع هذا فإنها حقبة تقتضي تفسيرا تاريخيا، نظرا لما تتصف به من قسمات كثيرة فريدة  

Nevertheless it is a period which calls for historical explanation because it has so many unique features

تميزت الحضارة الغربية على مدى القرون الثلاثة الأخيرة بخاصية تواصل واستمرارية الثورة التكنولوجية. وهذه الخاصية هي نتاج العديد من التطورات التي تلاقت لتصب معا في هذا الاتجاه  

The condition of continuing technological revolution which has characterized Western Civilization for the past three hundred years is the product of several converging developments  

ن من أهم العوامل ابتكار الزراعة المنظمة التي هيأت إمكان قيام المجتمع المستقر، وخلقت إمكانا للتوسع السكاني  

Amongst the more important factors have been the invention of systematic agriculture making possible a settled society and creating the potential for an expansion of population

التنافس الشديد بين الفرق السياسية والدينية المتصارعة والذي خلق مجالا لازدهار الآراء التي تلاقت معا  

the intense rivalry between conflicting political and religious factions creating scope for diver gent views to flourish  

التكنولوجيا هي دراسة الأساليب الفنية التقنيات البشرية في صناعة وعمل الأشياء  

Technology is the study of human techniques for making and doing things  

وأسلوب تشعبها وانتشارها، وأسباب تدهورها وانحسارها  

their ramifications and the reasons for their decline  

ذلك لأن هذا التصور المحدود للتكنولوجيا يتضمن على محدوديته مجالا واسعا هائلا

for even this narrow conception of technology covers an enormous field  

ولكنها جميعها تخضع لاختبار الدقة والمصداقية وبيان الدلالة والأهمية  

but all of which are subject to testing for accuracy reliability and significance

أو من تراث ثقافي وممارسات ثقافية ميسورة يمكن بحثها ودراستها من قبل علماء الأنثروبولوجيا وغيرهم من الخبراء  

or the cultural traditions and practices available for examination by anthropologists and other experts -  

وبذا فإن تاريخ هذه الأنواع على مدى مليوني سنة أو ثلاثة ملايين مضت. يشكل بصدق أحد مجالات اهتمام مؤرخ التكنولوجيا  

The history of these species over the last two or three million years is thus properly a field of interest to the historian of technology  

وبات مألوفا على وجه الخصوص قصر نطاق التكنولوجيا على هذه التقنيات الإنتاجية والصناعية وتقنيات التشييد والنقل والاتصالات التي هي مجال استخدام هذه الطاقة  

In particular it has become customary to limit the scope of technology to those techniques concerned with harnessing or generating power together with the productive and manufacturing techniques and the constructional transport and communication techniques to which this power is applied

أو أي طبيعة أخرى خاصة بها  

or any other special nature  

والمعروف أن التاريخ التقليدي يعتمد اعتمادا كبيرا على البيانات والشواهد الوثائقية - السجلات والوثائق المكتوبة والمطبوعة التي خلفها المشاركون في حقبة تاريخية أو حدث تاريخي

Most traditional historiography depends heavily upon documentary evidence - the written and printed records left by the participants in a historical period or event  

وقد تكون هذه الوثائق شخصية أو إدارية وذات طبيعة رسمية أو غير رسمية  

which may be of a personal or official an informal or a formal nature

ولكن يحق لنا القول إن جميع صور الشواهد والبيانات التاريخية الأخرى - المادية والطبيعية والشفاهية والثقافية - لابد من تحويلها إلى صورة وثائقية في شكل تقرير أو بيان مكتوب قبل استخدامها في البحث والتحقيق التاريخيين

It is true to say moreover that all other forms of historical evidence - physical oral and cultural - must be converted into a documentary form in the shape of a written report or statement before they can be readily used in a historical investigation  

التي تقع بين يديه وأن يتساءل عما إذا كانت هناك أي معلومات إضافية يتعين تجميعها  

which come into his or her hands and to ask whether there is any additional information to be gathered

أو من تراث ثقافي وممارسات ثقافية ميسورة يمكن بحثها ودراستها من قبل علماء الأنثروبولوجيا وغيرهم من الخبراء  

or the cultural traditions and practices available for examination by anthropologists and other experts -  

ولكن يتعين القول إننا لم نضع أيدينا بعد على برهان حاسم يؤكد حدوث هذا الانتقال على هذا النحو

but it has to be said that as yet no conclusive proof has emerged that such a transmission occurred

As far as the contribution of the exponents of the `social construction' of technology is concerned this has generated considerable enthusiasm and warmth but as yet remarkably little light

ولكن دون أن يتوافر حتى الآن قدر كاف من الفهم لطبيعة الحزمة الاجتماعية اللازمة لتحقيق تلك المنافع  

without as yet much understanding of the nature of the social package which is necessary if they are to be achieved

ولكن المحرك البخاري هو الذي يمثل أروع برهان على وجود محول للطاقة يعمل بأسلوب جديد  

Yet it was the steam engine which provided the most spectacular demonstration of a new style of energy converter

ولكنها لم تكن بعد قد هيمنت على النقل البري على الرغم من الاهتمام الشديد بتحسين وتطوير بطاريات قادرة على تزويد مركبات البر بطاقة تهيئ لها إمكان أداء مماثل لقدرات السيارات

But it has as yet hardly impinged on road transport even though much attention has been given to the improvement of batteries capable of powering road vehicles with a standard of performance commensurate with that of the automobile

غير أن من المتوقع أن تستمر قوة دفع الزيادة لبضع سنوات قادمة نظراً لأن عادات تنظيم النسل لم تنتشر بعد على نطاق واسع في البلدان الأقل تقدما  

For some years to come however the momentum of growth will continue because the habits of birth control have not yet spread widely in the less-developed countries
