وبدأ الإنتاج الكبير لأجهزة اللاسلكي المجهزة بصمامات ثرميونية والتي تستمد التيار من بطارية أو من مصادر توصيل رئيسية ومبيتة داخل صندوق مغطى بمادة الراتنج الصناعي الباكلايت

كما ظهر معها نظام نجوم السينما الذي حظي بفضله كبار الممثلين على شهرة شعبية تطبق الآفاق

وأول هذه التجارب هي التجربة المعروفة باسم كوبري العارضة الصندوقية، وهو عبارة عن نفق أسطواني من الحديد المطاوع على مدى مسافتين فاصلتين بين الدعامات. وأنشأ هذا الكوبري روبرت ستيفنسون العام 1849 ليحمل قطاره الحديدي عبر مضايق ميناي التي تبعد ميلا عن نقطة عبور جسر تلفورد  

The first box-girder bridge was the wrought-iron tube built in two spans by Robert Stephenson in 1849 to carry his railway over the Menai Straits a mile away from Telford's earlier crossing point

وثالثا افتقاد التلاحم السياسي فيما بين الدول - المدن التي ازدهرت بفضل الروابط التجارية الناجحة على امتداد محيط حضارات الشرق الأوسط القوية المتماسكة.

and by the lack of political cohesion amongst the city-states which encouraged by thriving trading links flourished on the periphery of the monolithic civilizations of the Middle East

كذلك فإن الدول - المدن في اليونان القديمة. وفي الامبراطورية الرومانية ارتضت، شأنها شأن الحضارات القديمة الأخرى، نظام العبودية باعتباره عنصرا ضروريا في البنية التحتية للمجتمع لتوفير قوة العمل اللازمة للأعمال شديدة الوضاعة والتي تقتضي إجهادا بدنيا

Also in common with other ancient civilizations the city-states of Greece and the empire of Rome accepted the institution of slavery as a necessary part of the social substructure providing a labour force for the most menial and physically laborious work  

وأصبحت عاصمة البلاد، كما كانت في القرن التاسع عشر، مدينة ضخمة الآن مثل نيويورك أو طوكيو

اتسع نطاق المدينة ذاتها نتيجة لنشوء مناطق أزالت النيران أشجارها وعرفت بعبارة glacis

ومنها- مثل "المطر الحامضي"- ما يردد أصداء القرن التاسع عشر

وتردد تلك الأفكار أصداء قصائد الرثاء باللغة الإنجليزية القديمة، مثل قصيدة The Seafarer (الملاح) الذي نكبت حياته

وهناك أسماء أخرى تطلق على هذه الظاهرة مثل: التزامن الحركي synchrony وصدى الوضع الجسمي Morris  

Other names for this are 'synchrony' and 'postural echo'

وأمريكا أو نيويورك، في هذا الصدد، أشبه بحجرة الصدى  

and America or New York is in this respect like an echo chamber  

فحقيقة أنني فلسطيني يواجه لونا بشعا من غرف الصدى خاصا بالإرهاب

والعنز والغزال البري

وفي أوقات أكثر قربا من الناحية التاريخية استخدمت بدائل حيوانية (حمل أو عنز مثلا

In more recent times historically animal substitutes may have been used (for example a lamb or goat)  

الذي كان يتمثل على هيئة عنز (Tragos) يتم قتلها وتقطيع أوصالها وأكلها نيئة

in the form of a goat (tragos) which was torn to pieces and eaten raw  

وكانت دائما مفعمة بالابتهاج والسرور الخاص بالتراجوياداي Tragaidia أو أغاني الماعز Goat songs

and enlivened with tragoidiai ('goat songs')  

وقد أعطيت هذه المهمة رسميا للمحتسب  

" This duty was given officially to the market inspector (muhtasib)  

فإن المهام الرسمية للمحتسب لم تنحصر في تطبيق آداب الطريق  

the official duties of the inspector entailed not just enforcing the rules of traffic

وقد اعتبرت هذه المهمة من الخطورة بحيث أوجدت لها وظيفة رسمية هي وظيفة المحتسب  

" Moreover this duty was taken so seriously that an official position was created the market inspector (muhtasib)  

فمع أنه كثيرا ما يوصف بأنه مفتش للسّوق  

for though he is often described as the market inspector  

وهذا يعني أن المحتسب كان يمارس القضاء "خارج المحكمة  

In other words the market inspector administered "out of court" justice

وهكذا، فإن الحضارة الغربية وحدها، دون الثقافات الدنيوية الأخرى، أصبحت لها سطوة وسلطان على جيرانها وعلى بيئتها بفضل الاستخدام الجاد والنشط لتكنولوجيا دينامية، شجعت على تطورها ظروف اجتماعية توافرت في كل بلد من بلدان الغرب

Alone amongst terrestrial cultures therefore Western Civilization has achieved power over its neighbours and over its environment by the strenuous application of a dynamic technology which has been encouraged to develop by the social conditions within its member states

ولكن ضغط المنافسة من جيران ومنافسي هذه الخطوط أجبرها على التحول والعودة إلى مقياس العرض المعياري في العام 1892  

and the pressure of competition from its neighbours and rivals eventually obliged the GWR to convert to standard gauge in 1892

زد على هذا أن الطرق المحسنة هيأت فرصة لنقل الركاب. واغتنم هذه الفرصة أصحاب المشروعات الذين بدأوا في تقديم خدمات نقل الركاب عن طريق مركبات سريعة  

Moreover the opportunity for passenger transport offered by the improved roads had been seized by enterprises operating fast stagecoach services  

كذلك أفادت خبرة بناء الطرق رجال السكك الحديدية خاصة عندما كانت حافلات الركاب مطلوبة للسكك الحديدية  

Road-building experience was also helpful to the railwaymen and even more significantly when passenger carriages were required for the railways  

إذ كان برونيل يتطلع إلى خدمة مركبة ركاب سريعة إكسبريس، وليس خط سكك حديدية خاص بمنشآت مناجم الفحم، ووضع حساباته لهذا الشأن. ورأى أن تحقيق هذا الهدف لا يستلزم فقط مسارا مستويا للغاية

Brunel aspired to run an express passenger service rather than a glorified colliery railway and he calculated that in order to achieve this he required not only a very level course  

وأحد أسباب هذا الهبوط هو توقف خطوط نقل المسافرين بعد التحول إلى خطوط الطيران الأسرع كثيرا  

Part of this decline has been caused by the demise of the passenger liner with the shift to the much faster air routes  

وتكونت صور مقولبة أخرى كثيرة منها ما ينطوي على عناصر صدق  

Many other stereotypes have been formed and some have grains of truth in them

W F Cooke and C Wheatstone entered into partnership to develop such a system in 1836 and took out their first patent in the following year

In the same year another German engineer Karl Benz used a single-cylinder petrol engine to drive a three-wheeled vehicle

وحقق في العام نفسه مهندس السيارات البريطاني الجنسية انتصارا كبيرا بفضل إلغاء قانون الراية الحمراء Red Flag Act الذي كان يفرض عقوبة على جميع أشكال الدفع الميكانيكي للحركة على الطرق  

and in the same year British motorists achieved a notable victory with the repeal of the `Red Flag' Act which had penalized all forms of mechanical propulsion on roads  

الذي أدى إلى زيادة الإنتاج إلى أكثر من مليوني سيارة في العام، وبذا سيطرت السيارة موديل تي على السوق العالمية  

By 1923 production had risen to more than two million a year and the Model T commanded a world market
