Before and After
I was 284 pounds when I started taking martial arts classes. I can't begin to express my nervousness or how embarrassed I was to be seen bouncing all over the floor in Tae Kwon Do class at the Bangor YMCA. Gaylen went with me, as we both were hoping to find a fun way to lose weight together. Even then, he showed immense natural martial arts ability, while I did well just to get through the classes.

Everyone was very kind and understanding. Not once did anyone make me feel uncomfortable or like I had no business being in the classes. In fact, they encouraged me to reach beyond what I thought I could do.

By the end of a year, I had reached my goal of 200 pounds by Christmas, and Gaylen and I celebrated by having pizza for the first time in an entire year. Two days later, we were right back at it, going to several classes a week, practicing at home, and enjoying what's become a whole new, exciting and active life for us.

Now, we both study Shaolin Kempo with Joel Merriam, and it's become a major aspect of our lives and allowed us to continue our conditioning and make many new and wonderful friends.

Gaylen has lost more than 65 pounds, while I've lost more than 100--and we keep going. The motivation is still there, because learning Kempo is so exciting and keeps us interested in working out.
Today, I am no longer morbidly obese. I am still overweight, but I've made massive progress.
