Here's some links to my favourite Manga series websites:
Akira was a successful Japanese Manga in the mid-eighties, which was made into OAV form and also serialised in the UK in Manga Mania. A film was produced, which remains probably the best-known Manga film ever.
After Akira, Ghost in the shell was the next big success for Manga film. Released in the mid-90's, it has one of the highest budgets for a manga film, most of which went on computer animation.
(Could this be the smallest gayest picture ever?) Anyway, this link's for Patlabor, in my opinion the best robot-based Manga ever made.
Gundam is another robot-based Manga which has had loads of spin-offs, promotions and other stuff made for it. Probably the  most popular series of all time.
If, like me, you grew up in the eighties and watched Childrens BBC with Andy Crane and Phillip Schofield, then you might remember this series. It rocked. Here's everything you need to know about the series you've forgotten (that means you Tom)
