Super Mario Bros. 3

By:  Bryant Jackson
Ask anyone about their favorite Mario Bros. game and you'll likely get one of the most popular NES games ever made.  Super Mario Bros. 3 was a landmark on the NES and more so in the entire gaming community.  With all the New Gen remakes of popular classics, it was inevitable that SMB3 would be put on a GameBoy Advanced Cartridge.  Steering away from the modern title with the E-Reader compatibility and new unlockables, I chose to review this title on where it was created, the NES.

Graphics:  The graphics in this rare gem are amazing.  They may not keep up with the highly detailed characters in games such as Halo or Grand Theft Auto:  Vice City, but they are good to people who appreciate their roots.  SMB3 uses all the NES's power to create excellent sprites with many different movements.

Play Control:  The controls in SMB3 are simple.  You can walk, jump, run, duck, and fly.  All these commands are executed using the D-Pad and both the A and B buttons.  If you can't control Mario maybe you should consider something other than video games as a hobby.

Game Design:  This game is more than any Mario fan could ask for.  When you start the game you're confronted with something not seen in any past Mario game.  You are given a map.  You're given the choice to move freely and, in some cases, skip levels.  That's not all the new options SMB3 offers.  You're given a row in the beginning that is blank, but it won't be that way for long.  The game offers another new feature to Mario games.  You can play mini-games to win items.  The items you win from the mini-games are put on that bar so you can use them before you enter a level.  The games also has a variety of suits for Mario to wear that give him special powers.  There are many other new features that I won't list, you'll have to play the game to find them out.

Satisfaction:  The game originally sold for about $50 and now goes for only about $10 at most game stores.  It was worth the $50 back in 1990 and is well worth the price today.  This is a great game that most anyone can fall in love with.  Although it can take a long time to beat, and can be a bit tedious at times, it's a great game and worth the time and patience.

Sound:  Some of the best music in a Mario game.  Some of the best music on NES.  Some of the best game music ever.  Period.
