| Red Dead Revolver |
| Red Dead Revolver is a western game that Capcom started and abandoned, leaving the chance for Rockstar to take over. I was sort of divided about this game. I'm not a real western fan, but I took an open mind and dove in. The story, what there is of it, is a revenge story. Red, a bounty hunter, searches for his father's killer. In reality, though, the story is very scattered. The first level shows Red and his mother and father. His home is attacked and his parents die defending it. After that the story is pushed aside for a while. Longer than it should. Then after about ten other levels it is picked back up. Red gets a lead on his father's killer. The information shows that there are three involved in the murder of his father. You're introduced to the characters and sometimes wonder why. There are six playable characters in Red Dead Revolver. The game dosen't allow much playtime though. Each character, except Red, is only used for one mission. I would have loved to play as some of the other characters longer than I did. There were good points, of course. Rockstar did an excellent job creating the atmosphere. The camera will seem low grade and old timey. The grainy cinemas are also awesome. The sound effects are great. All of them are very high quality. The soundtrack was also straight out of the old west. The recreation was superbly done. Rockstar never fails to give players a great feel for the enviroment of it's games. The game also featured two bullet time modes. Like Rockstar's own Max Payne there was a mode called Dead Eye. It took the player into bullet time, allowing them to dodge bullets easier, but also locked onto the enemy in certain areas. When the mode was released the player would fire a bullet at each target allowing for a quick finish to a foe. The second is the showdown. A western game would be incomplete without showdowns. It's basically a quickdraw where you can target the enemy up to six times and attempt to take them down. As for difficulty the game let me down. I played through the game twice in a few hours. The boss battles weren't very challenging and neither was the hard version of the story mode. There is a Bounty Hunter mode, which is a select stage with a challenging goal. It gave me some work and was the hardest part of the game. Red Dead Revolver gave me some fun, but not enough for me to even consider buying it. If you enjoy a good action game where you can shoot down all the bad guys quickly, I recommend this to you. Western fans will also enjoy it's awesome enviroment and feel. Overall a pretty fun game for the moment, but not a keeper. |
