Lift Pouches and Leaders
This is the finishing steps for your shells. These two steps really arn't necassary and are only for if you need to use them in a show, or of course just want them to look a little more professional.
The lift pouch is merely a container that holds your lifting charge. This pouch is fitted against the shell and has a "leader" running from it and out the top of the mortar. By using this we can load the shells and ignite them from the top so this way they can be fused togethor easier for displays. It is also faster reloading as the pyrotechnic doesn't have to measure, pour the lift in the tube, and attach a fuse at the site.
The purpous of a leader is to provide a short delay the length of the fuse. Once the fuse reaches the quick match it will burn almost instantaneously! Quick match burns extremely fast and should never be used as the primary fuse!!

What You'll Need:
1. A length of
Quickmatch as long as your mortar.
2. your pouch (I use either just some folded Kraft or a toilet paper roll is kinda handy)

Assuming your using a toilet paper roll (an empty one!) start by cutting it in half. Now take and make cuts into one end so that the notches created will be long enough that when all of them are folded over it completely closes up the tube. Now just fold these little tabs over and glue them togethor. This is the bottom of your pouch. At the other end make more notches but these ones should be just tiny ones about 1/4 - 12".

The leader is just a piece of
Quickmatch with a fuse attached to one end. If you have no quickmatch available you can use a cheap alternative.... sticky match. This is simple to make. Just take a length of duck tape as long as your mortar and pour a small line of granulated BP down the center of the strip. On one end put a fuse in with the BP so that it touches the BP but most of the fuse comes out of the tape.  Now carefully fold the tape over and smooth it so that the line of BP doesn't move.  A warning...this will work nearly as fast as quickmatch so care should be taken.

Measure out your lift....this will be different depending on the power of your lift. I use 1/10 the weight of my shell personally. Pour the lift in your pouch and slide the end of your leader into the pouch. Now attach the lift pouch to the shell by pressing it against the bottom of the shell (with the fuse in the center) the tabs (as should now be obvious) will bend out to take the shape of the shells curve and glue it. Personally I just put a bead of hot glue around the edge.
Well there ya go your shell is ready. Just slide it in the mortar with the leader out, the pouch should of course be on the bottom
