Author’s note: Wow I’m getting these done fast. I’m so glad I had this thing completely planned before I started. It helps, trust me. I even have the sequel planned. That’s just sad. Anyway, on with the show.
The group arrived at Anne and Marina’s house around an hour after they escaped the mall. It was an old, Victorian looking house painted blood red with white trim. A white porch wrapped around the outside and a tall pine tree stood off to one side. On the porch swung a small mahogany porch swing with a book on it. Marina stooped down to retrieve her book before taking out her key and opening the house.
The inside was a little more modern looking than the outside. In one room sat a large TV with a couch and two large fluffy chairs placed around it. A small dinning room lay off to the side and a kitchen could be seen through a door in the back. Right in front of the doorway, old carpeted stairs led up to the second floor.
“Well, make yourselves at home,” Marina said, kicking off her shoes on the carpet in front of the door. Cassandra peeked around the living room.
“Nice place you got here,” she murmured. Anna eyed the house perceptively. Why do I feel like I’ve been here before? she thought. I’m almost afraid to look into the other room. The rest of the group filed in, Rhodry setting Caitlin down on one of the chairs until she woke up.
“So, what do we do now?” asked Heather. Myrandel shrugged and sat down on the couch.
“We should probably tell you a little more about what’s going on, then just hang out and rest up and see what happens next,” he said. Abby nodded.
“Alright. So you seem to know a lot about our gifts. We’d also probably like to know a little more about you three,” she said. There were a few nods of agreement.
“Well…” Myrandel began.
“Anne? What’s going on here? Who are all these people?” asked a voice from behind everyone. Mark, Anne and Marina’s older brother, had come down the stairs and seen the group. He gave most of them, the ones he didn’t know inparticular, a cold glance and walked up to his sisters. Anne sighed. I should have known this would happen, she thought.
“You must be Anne and Marina’s brother,” said Myrandel, standing. He held out his hand. “Sorry for the surprise. My name is Myrandel. Why don’t you sit down and we’ll explain.” Mark’s cold glare didn’t subside, but he took Myrandel’s hand and shook it stiffly.
“I’ll continue standing thank you. Now who are all of you and what are you doing here?” he asked coldly. Myrandel sighed and began to explain their situation. By the end of it, Mark did indeed find he had to sit down. That or fall over from shock. “Are you trying to tell me that these girls, including my little sisters, are some kind of superheroes?” he asked. Myrandel shrugged and nodded.
“To some extent yes. The legend’s origin is a mystery, but we’ve seen for ourselves what these nine are capable of,” he said. Mark sighed.
“It’s hard to except the meaning behind what you’re saying. If you’re legend is correct, and these nine girls are indeed the Guardians you speak of, then this planet is about to be thrown into chaos,” he said. Rhodry grimaced.
“It was hard for us to except to, but our father made us promise to find and protect the nine until they awakened. And guide and help them when we could afterwards,” he said. Mark gave Rhodry a questioning look.
“If your father knew this legend, and you say that no one you’ve met has heard it, then who was he?” he asked. Myrandel smirked.
“An angel.”
“WHAT!” The entire room rang with the combined voices of Mark, Kevin, Joe, Jason and the girls. Heather turned to Tooya.
“And what about you?” she asked.
“My mother was one,” Tooya replied, his brilliant green eyes giving her a look that told her to ask no further.
“So you three aren’t completely human?” Anne asked. Myrandel nodded.
“We can shift between human and angelic forms, but it’s easier to stay in human form. Half bloods like us are extremely rare. It’s a miracle that we even met up with Tooya since Rhodry and I aren’t related to him. Our father, like Rhodry said, told us the legend before he died. He sensed something was going to happen soon and begged us to find and help you nine,” he explained.
“Wow we’re a strange bunch, nine girls with elemental powers, three half-angels, two mages and a psychic. Definatly weird,” said Caitlin from the chair. She had woken up during Myrandel’s explanation to Mark and had been listening quietly since.
“You’re awake,” stated Anne. Caitlin nodded.
“Have been for a while. You people really aren’t that observant,” she said. Her robe faded and replaced itself with her street clothes. Mark just stared at her.
“How did you do that?” he asked.
“Do what?”
“Change clothes like that.”
“I don’t know. I just did.” Mark shook his head, deciding not to ask further.
“Well, our parents are out of town for the week and won’t be back till next Thursday, so I guess all of you could stay here until we figure out what’s going on. I’ll warn you, we’ll have to cram,” he said. Kevin grinned.
“I knew you’d come through,” he said. Mark just glared.
“Mooch.”
“You know it.” Abby tapped a finger to her cheek.
“Speaking of clothes, how exactly are we supposed to fight these demon critters in the equivalent of dresses? They’d get in the way if we started fighting close quarters,” she said. Caitlin raised an eyebrow. (something that has been bugging me for awhile)
“Now that’s something I never thought of,” she said, standing. She stood still, as if thinking for a second, then closed her eyes and held her hand out in front of her. “Power of Light, I call thee. Shift thy power and awaken anew,” she spoke, her voice almost ghostly, as if it wasn’t really her talking. Light collected around her feet, slowly creating a glowing circle before bursting from the floor to cover the Light Guardian completely. An unknown voice echoed in the back of her mind. Guardian of Light thy are, and now Warrior of Light thou shall become. Awaken to thy true power, it said.
Caitlin reappeared dressed in an outfit that seemed far more practical for fighting than the robe she had worn before. I wonder what that voice was, she thought, before taking inventory of her costume. The shirt was white and cut loosely with a boat-neck collar and she wore tight silvery colored shorts and knee high, lace up boots of the same color. From her back to her waist fell a short white cloak while around her wrists wrapped a pair of arm guards. Two daggers attached to her belt. Caitlin inspected her wrists carefully. They two sported a pair of daggers and she could feel another pair tucked into her boots. Caitlin grinned. “I assume this fits your idea Abby?” she asked. Abby nodded, shocked as Caitlin changed back to her civilian clothes. “It was weird though. The power I felt when I first transformed was almost familiar, but this one felt brand new.” Myrandel shrugged.
“I can tell you that I’ve never heard of a transformation like that, though it could come in handy. You other girls probably have the same power, but don’t try it now. Wait until you need it,” he said. The girls nodded.
“Right, so… anyone got anything to do? I’m bored,” stated Aria. The girls laughed.
Hours later, the group was still hanging out around Anne and Marina’s house. Caitlin was outside, sitting near the top of the pine tree and zoning out, Marina was reading again on the porch swing, Heather was lying back, half sleeping on the lawn while Liesl leaned back against the house porch with her eyes closed. Aria and Anna were playing checkers on a board found in Anne’s closet, Abby was doodling in a notebook on the porch steps, and Cass was fiddling with a small stick between her fingers. Anne looked up at the sky from her spot near the door. She could see Tooya talking with Kevin further out in the lawn near the street.
Anne grinned. The redhead was kind of cute. And nice too, once you got him talking. She had gotten a chance to speak with him a little earlier and had found she liked him a lot. Maybe a little too much considering she’d just met him. She turned her attention back the clear blue sky. She could see Caitlin up the tree in her own little world. Another little phenomena, she had also spoken with the blue-eyed Light Guardian and had found her far to familiar. Did I know her in a past life or something? I didn’t feel that kind of connection from any of her friends, she thought.
Up in the tree, Caitlin was having similar thoughts. How had she known how to use these crazy powers? It was almost as if some unknown force was guiding her. And why am I so comfortable around Anne inparticular? I barely know her and her friends. Is it because we’re both Guardians? No, then I’d feel a similar connection to her friends. Why just Anne? she thought.
She turned her gaze down into the yard and grinned. Somehow, Aria was kicking Anna’s butt at checkers. Her gaze floated to eventually rest on Rhodry, where he was talking with Jason, Joe and his brother Myrandel. What was it about the longhaired man? Caitlin had never felt particularly comfortable around men she had just met, but hell this guy had gotten closer to her then some of her closer guy friends and she hadn’t felt the slightest bit uncomfortable. In fact, she felt oddly safe and calm. Why to I feel as if I know him from somewhere? I could have sworn I recognized his voice, but I’ve never seen him in my life! Why then do I feel so comfortable around him? she asked herself.
Liesl found herself glancing over towards her brother’s friend Joe a little more than was normal. What was it about that guy? Sure he was cute. But why did she feel like she knew him?
“I win!” Aria whooped. Anna mock glared at her.
“Stupid black. I always play bad with black,” she muttered, lying back on the grass. Her eyes wandered the sky, eventually resting on the young mage Jason. The guy’s dark brown hair and pale blue eyes reminded her of someone, but who? Besides the fact that he was very cute, why did she feel almost compelled to like him? Damn this day had been weird.
Oddly enough, Abby also found her eyes wandering from her drawings to rest on one of the young men in their group. Kevin, who was still talking to Tooya, was the particular one to catch her eye. Who was this guy anyway? She knew he was Liesl’s older brother, but what part did he have to play in their little drama? And why was he now staring at her like that! Abby averted her eyes abruptly, trying to keep from blushing with embarrassment. This was just too weird.
Like the other girls, Heather too found her eyes wandering. But for some reason, it took much longer for her to find her object of confusion/admiration. She had already decided that she liked Myrandel at least as a friend back at the mall. I mean hey the guy was cute too, that didn’t hurt. But who was he? She turned her gaze to rest on Mark. Her friend’s older brother had always held a kind of fascination for her, almost a crush. But then why did this guy Myrandel seem to be so much more interesting to her now?
The tiny twig in Cassandra’s fingers fell to the ground. She gazed up at the sky, letting out an annoyed sigh. She could sense her sister’s confusion over the situation and it did nothing to calm her nerves. They know we’re here. So why haven’t they attacked? Why would they just attack the mall? she thought. Her gaze shifted to rest on the young Life Guardian, her new partner and counterpart. Those mysterious golden eyes held some kind of secret within them, she knew. A secret that Marina herself may not even know of.
Marina closed her book and rolled over on her back. This day had been beyond weird. When I said I wanted something to happen, I don’t think I meant it to go this far, she thought. She shifted to her side, gazing out at the various people on her lawn. This certainly is a strange group.
Blue eyes shot open in shock, gazing frantically around Anne’s front yard. The sun had set hours ago and yet for some reason, Caitlin was still settled comfortably in the tree, half dozing.
But now something and startled her. A trio of dark shapes, silhouetted against the full moon, was flying towards her at a swift pace. Caitlin jumped up, nearly loosing her balance on the tree branch. In a flash of light, she transformed, her guardian robe fading to her newer, more practical outfit. White feathered wings exploded from her back as she leapt out of the tree and fluttered to the ground. Her wings vanished as soon as she touched the earth and she dashed into the house. Marina looked up from her comfortable spot on the couch, giving her a confused look.
“What’s wrong? Why are you transformed?” she asked the worried Light Guardian.
“There’s something coming towards us from the east. Three winged shapes,” Caitlin responded. Marina’s golden eyes went wide. She jumped up from the couch and dashed out of the room, calling for her sister. Within minutes, all nine guardians as well as their now seven male allies were gathered on the porch outside.
Caitlin looked up at the sky, shivering as the figures came closer and closer. Flashes of light, swirls of sparkling dust and waves of liquid heralded the transformations of the other eight guardians. Abby looked up, pale eyes blazing.
“Time to try something new,” she said, closing her eyes in concentration. A ring of water collected around her feet, rushing upwards to cover her completely. She reappeared in an outfit similar to Caitlin’s own, defiantly more practical than the robes they had originally transformed into. A pleated blue-black skirt fell to her knees, belted by a black and silver waistband. The shirt was blue, and cut like a tub-top while black armbands held wisps of sapphire fabric that fell to her wrists. Small black boots covered her feet. Abby glanced out at the battle, her staff materializing in her hands.
As Abby stepped forward, Caitlin created a glowing silver white barrier around the other seven to protect them from the coming onslaught. The three demonic creatures touched down in front of them. The first two were dark, almost blending into the night, their scarlet eyes blazing with a demonic gleam. The third, however, was far different from any demon they’d seen so far. Ruffled golden hair fell to his pale shoulders and soft blue eyes blazed out from beneath delicate, almost feminine brows. Had it not been for the tattered, bat-like wings sprouting from his shoulder blades, they would never have guessed his demonic heritage. The creature smirked.
“Welcome, Guardians,” he sneered. “Welcome to your doom.” The demon lashed out with a flash of blue-gold energy. In their shock, all Abby and Caitlin could do was dive out of the way as the energy glanced off of Caitlin’s shield and hit the corner of the roof above.
The ring of fire surrounding Anna dissipated almost as soon as it was lit. The Flame Guardian looked down at her outfit, inspecting it. Deep orange pants fell loosely around her legs to orange-yellow boots. A red shirt draped off of her shoulders, small golden clasps the only thing that held the sleeves together at the outer arm. Anna smirked as Heather’s twisting ball of vines detangled itself to reveal the Earth Guardian.
Heather appeared wearing tight brown shorts, a green skirt, slit along the legs, flowed to the base of them. The shirt was a whirling brown-green, and sleeveless with deep green arm cuffs gracing her wrists. Dark brown, lace up boots rose to her knees. Heather’s blue eyes flicked towards the battle, than towards Anna. Seeing the fire guardian’s nod, she stepped out of the blazing shield.
As the Earth and Fire Guardians stepped onto the field, Joe and Jason leapt to join the fight flinging red and orange energy blasts at the two lesser demons that circled around Abby and Caitlin. The Water and Light Guardians were faring less than well against the obviously more powerful blond demon. The creature was dodging bursts of light and waves of water left and right, and returning their attacks with his own powerful energy blasts.
“Who are you?” Caitlin shouted at him, wincing from a wound where an energy blast had grazed her shoulder. The demon smirked, standing tall as his form was washed over by flames. Caitlin turned to smile at Anna, who had joined their fight. Neither Anna nor Heather, however, looked so thrilled. And for good reason too, for as the flames dissipated, a gold edged blue shield flickered out of existence around the blond demon. The smirk on the creatures face became a contorted, deranged grin.
“You guardians have no chance of defeating me. Not with your measly powers. Though I guess I should tell you who your executioner will be. I am Balthas, ruler of Hell and soon to be ruler of Earth.,” he said. The four transformed guardians glared at the creature.
“Over our dead bodies will you conquer earth!” yelled Heather.
Impenetrable, dark energy dissipated from where Anne stood, her dark eyes flashing angrily. She too, had changed, now in a loose, black, long sleeved shirt that laced up at the neck and widened at the wrists. Tight black pants ran down her legs, flaring out to cover mid-calf high black leather boots. A black leather belt and pair of arm cuffs under her sleeves finished the outfit.
Liesl joined her friend as her swirling orb of wind disappeared. She was dressed in gold and pastel, her sleeveless shirt swirling with the pale iridescent colors of the rainbow. A knee length golden skirt brushed over knee high golden boots, and a thin gold ribbon wrapped around her neck. She smirked at Anne, then nodded towards the fight. Anne’s evil grin was all she needed to leave the circle.
Joe fell to the ground, his powers severely weakened by his attackers latest blow. Jason wasn’t faring much better; his orange energy blasts weakening with each use. Myrandel, Tooya and Rhodry, who had joined in to help them, were also taking some severe blows. Anne grimaced as she stepped onto the battlefield. As much as she knew they needed her help, their largest problem lay with the immensely powerful blond demon who was currently circled by four of the young guardians. Every blast of power they sent at him was either absorbed or reflected by that damn shield.
Liesl drew her crossbow and fired a volley of golden arrows at the demon only to have them bounce away. Her eyes narrowed. This creature was far too powerful for a mere demon.
Cassandra and Marina finally broke out of their transformation sequences in twin bursts of emerald and blood red light. Cass glared out menacingly at the battlefield, twirling her scythe expertly. Her costume had changed to a tight, form fitting black shirt with sleeves created of some inexplicably fine and yet durable black and red, spidery lace. Tight black shorts griped her hips while deep red fishnet like leggings ran up from her black, knee high lace up boots to her mid-thigh.
Marina appeared in a similar, well, almost identical costume of emerald and gold. Instead of wrist length sleeves, hers were short and slightly tattered looking. Pale emerald boots rose only to just above her ankles and her shorts were tattered at the edges much like her sleeves.
As the Life and Death Guardians stepped onto the battlefield they were greeted by twin blasts of blue-gold energy. Marina dodged while Cassandra reflexively created a crackling shield of black and red lightning energy. Abby had been hit badly only moments before and was struggling to remain conscious while Caitlin tried to shield her friend.
The two other demons had long since been cut down but the effort required had knocked Jason and Joe unconscious. Myrandel suffered from a heavily bleeding wound at his side and a hard blow to the shoulder had hit Tooya. Whatever wound Rhodry had had was long since healed. He was now trying to help his brother while Kevin used his psychic powers to shield them.
Aria shivered as she completed her transformation, glittering amethyst wind still shifting around her. Beyond the light shield that now held her alone, the battle raged. The delicate sheer sleeves of Aria’s shirt fluttered to her wrists while the rest of the tight garment, a deep violet in color, clung around her. A filmy violet skirt drifted to her knees while violet leggings clung to her legs. She rose her filmy wings and stepped onto the battlefield, drawing her flute from its case as she went.
As Aria entered the fight, Caitlin dissipated the shield, focusing all her remaining power on the battle. Anne too was having trouble with this battle, a cut across her cheek and various other small wounds showing evidence. She raised her katana, blocking another attack as Aria’s sweet flute music filled the air. Beyond them, cackling like a madman, Balthas barely sported a scratch. He fired another round of blue-gold energy blasts, hitting the small shield Caitlin had created around Abby and breaking it.
“Abby!” yelled Anna, running towards her friend. She was sent to the ground by anther volley of attacks.
“Damn it! He’s too strong! We can’t beat him!” yelled Liesl.
“We can’t just give in!” Caitlin yelled back, dodging yet another volley of attacks. One flew by her, hitting Heather in the stomach and exploding.
“Arg! Damn it!” the Earth Guardian screamed, collapsing to her knees and clutching her abdomen.
“Heather!” Liesl yelled, running towards her.
“Liesl look out!” Anne yelled as her friend’s small weight was throne back by another energy blast.
“Yet another down,” cackled Balthas. “You were fools to oppose me.” Only five of the nine guardians remained conscious. Balthas grinned and flung and energy blast towards Aria, whose spirits were doing little damage despite the fact that millions now swarmed the battlefield. The second story of the house was in shambles and the tip of the pine tree was smoking. Aria stared dumbly at the attack, not knowing what to do.
“Aria! Look out!” Caitlin yelled, shoving the Spirit Guardian to the ground. The attack flung her back to the ground before the now blackened steps of Anne’s house. Cassandra’s eyes flew wide.
“Caitlin!” she screamed. The Death Guardian glared at Balthas, deadly energy crackling around the blade of her scythe. The two attacked simultaneously, their powers exploding as they collided. Cassandra was knocked back by the blast, her head hitting a rock and knocking her unconscious. Marina stopped dead. Why? she thought. Her eyes narrowed. He will pay. She fixed her deadly golden glare on the cackling demon before her, the crystal on her staff gleaming with emerald energy. Her sudden attack hit the demon full force, surprising and knocking him back. Balthas jumped to his feet, glaring intently at the Life Guardian.
“You will pay for that girl,” he hissed, wiping blood from his lip. The two glared at each other, the strength of their fury almost tangible. Anne and Aria, the only other Guardians left conscious, each took a step back. Anne’s eyes widened as she watched the glow of Marina’s staff increase. I have to stop her. Even if it means we’ll loose I have to stop her! she thought. Dust and debris lifted from the ground and swirled around the staff, glinting in the emerald light. Anne dashed towards her sister, grasping the staff in her two hands.
“Stop it Marina! You’ll kill us all!” she yelled to her enraged twin. Marina’s eyes widened and everything around them stopped. All Marina could see was the blue-gold energy spinning towards them. She pushed Anne aside, only to be throne back into the side of the house, stone and wood crumbling around her.
“Marina!” Anne screamed. She raised her blade towards Balthas. The blond demon chuckled, giving her a sly look.
“Do you think you can do any better with that stupid sword of yours? It’s funny really, you nine are supposed to be legends. The legendary invincible Guardians of Earth. You’re hardly invincible; you’re almost a joke. I wonder if rebirth has dulled that legendary power you’re supposed to have.
“Shut up!” Anne yelled, flinging herself at him, black energy crackling around her raised blade. She swung down, her eyes widening in surprise. Balthas had calmly caught the sparking blade. He smirked at her, and shoved her back with a blast of energy. Anne fell to her knees, sword on the ground beside her and chest heaving.
“Learn some patience, Guardian of Darkness,” he said, before knocking her unconscious with a second blast. The demon lifted his gaze, smirking at the last of his foes. Aria stood before him, eyes wide and flute clutched to her chest. He stepped forward, she stepped back, tripping over one of her fallen comrades. We can’t die here, her mind screamed. Don’t give up! echoed another voice in her mind. Sapphire eyes grew defiant as she raise the silver flute to her lips.
“Your spirit friends are useless against me. Give up you fool!” Balthas cried. Aria’s gaze grew harsher. Never give up! Never! the voice begged. Her song became more demanding. Eight lights suddenly lit the field surrounding them.
“What the?” Kevin’s eyes widened. A strong feeling of foreboding overwhelmed him, destroying his control over the psychic shield. Rhodry caught him as he collapsed, the sense of helplessness that had been creeping over the young half-blood only growing greater. Balthas had stopped short, gazing in shock at the multicolored lights forming around each Guardian. The lights shot into the sky as one, splitting and fleeing to the ends of the earth and taking their charges with them. Balthas glared at the defiant Spirit Guardian before him.
“What have you done with them!” he screamed. Aria glared at him, her expression showing far more strength than before.
“You’ll never find them. They’ll rise again and this time we’ll defeat you!” she replied. One last chance… spoke the mind voice before disappearing finally. Balthas’ face contorted into a grotesque mask. Blue gold energy glittered around him.
“You won’t live to see that day,” he hissed, gripping Aria by the neck and lifting her from the ground. Hands desperately tried to pull him away from her throat, blue-gold energy scorched pale skin, Aria tried to cry out, her breath escaping only in tiny gasps.
“Aria…” Kevin and the others could only watch in horror as a loud snap echoed through the night and the young blond's body was dropped unceremoniously to the ground. The demon turned his harsh sapphire gaze on the seven young men.
“Such is the fate of those who oppose me. All humanity shall bow to my power,” he said, gesturing to the broken body before him. He turned his back to them, glancing once at the young men. “Take heed, for the earth you once knew is no more.” With that he took off, flying towards the shadow-covered moon. Kevin shook with anger and frustration, as well as loss, looking over at the still unconscious bodies of Jason and Joe, then at Aria’s lifeless body.
“Is this it? Is the world just going to end now? Was this meaningless battle really worth the cost?” he asked. Rhodry bowed his head, looking at the earth surrounding them.
“What else can we do?” he asked, lifting his head to look once more at Aria’s body. His eyes widened. Before the young blonds dead body, three sphere’s of light had appeared, growing and solidifying into the ghostly figures of three women. The first two were most likely the spirits of deceased angels, both with dark hair and golden eyes. The third however, captured the most attention. She was a pretty young demon woman, with dark hair, and scarlet eyes, like most of her kind, and olive colored skin. Myrandel’s eyes widened. I know her, he thought, standing shakily and stumbling towards her. The demon woman turned amazingly gentle scarlet eyes in his direction.
“Do I know you?” he asked. The woman smiled, lifting his chin with a shimmering, olive hand.
“You do, in your heart,” she told him. The half-blood’s eyes widened.
“Jayne…” The demon woman placed a finger to his lips and kissed his forehead.
“I can’t stay with you Myrandel, as I am, I can only watch you from afar. Open your heart Myrandel, and learn to love again. Don’t let this chance pass you by,” she said.
“But…”
“No, Myrandel, it’s alright. I’m just glad I could see you, one last time.” Behind her, the two angel spirits sat beside Aria’s body, light flowing from them into her. Aria’s body glowed a brilliant violet, shrinking in size and shape as the three women began to disappear. “Take care of her,” Jayne told Myrandel. “She is the key to your salvation.” Myrandel nodded as the three woman faded into nothing. “Beware my…” the words were silenced on the wind.
“Jayne,” he whispered, a single tear rolling down his cheek. A child’s wail broke the silence. Myrandel jerked his head up to see a stunned Mark holding a ting child wrapped in glittering violet.
“Is that…” Kevin looked on, speechless. Mark nodded.
“This is Aria,” he said, shock evident in his voice.
“Then we do have a chance,” Myrandel said, his gaze hardening. Rhodry nodded, placing a hand on his older twin’s shoulder.
“Until she comes of age, we’ll protect her. And then, Balthas will pay,” he said, gazing at the small child.
“Until then,” Kevin echoed, gazing at the red streaked sky. “One more try.”
“Until then.”
Author’s note: Well I can’t have the good guys win ALL the time! That wouldn’t be any fun.
