TUTANKHAMUN (KING TUT)

Tutukhamun was the Pharaoh of Egypt between 1334 B.C. and 1325 B.C., the 12th Pharaoh in the 18th Dynasty. Not much is known about him. His throne name was Nebkheprure. His father was Smenkhkare who died at age 25 for unknown reasons. He was married when he was 9 years old to a girl called Ankhesenpaaten and became the ruler of Egypt. His name was originally Tutankhaten, but in his second year of ruling he changed it to Tutankhamum along with his wifes name which changed to Ankhesenamun. One of the things he did while he was a pharaoh was to return Egypt to its traditional ancient religion of Amun, and restored many temples. However he is not given credit for many of these things, because being so young much of the work was probably orders from his caregivers Ay and Horemheb. They lived first in Amarna but later moved to Memphis where they lived in the restored Amenhotep III building. Amoung the buildings he was responsible for are the images of Amun on the Karnak temple, sphinxes depicting Tutanhamun, and a small temple built in his name. Tutankhamun died at a young age of 17-18. The reason is unsure but it is suspected he may have been murdered from X-rays of his mummy. However he may have died from an accident. But there was much demand for his throne and after he died both Ay and Horemheb took his place. His tomb is located in the Valley of the Kings on the west bank by Luxor (originally Thebes).
