Well, here it is.  Independence day.  It brings with it questions.  Am I truly independent or am I in fact dependent upon others for my survival?  Obviously we will be talking in degrees.  First of all my ability to earn a living depends on customers buying the products we sell, so technically speaking I am dependent and in that regard (within this social organization) I will always be dependent.  Even if I were on a deserted island I would still be dependent on the fish, fruits etc. for my survival.

So what do we mean when we say we are independent?  I can assume that we express this in terms of our ability to take care of ourselves.  Primarily associating that ability with financial aspects.  In other words, can we support ourselves.  For me, the answer at this point is no.  I need a roommate to give me this security.  I am in no way saying this is a bad thing.  I only see it as a state which many people accept and have grown accustomed to doing.  We take on the responsibilities together and therefore make it easier to bear for everyone involved.

Another degree of independence would be that of our ideas and values.  This being that we are each our own person and rely on no one to make decisions for us.  If I had to ask myself if I am independent in this respect I must say yes.  Though it is true that other people influence my decisions, I know deep down that the decisions I make are ultimately my own.  And only by looking at the input of those around me can I strengthen my own decision to be the most beneficial to myself, without causing undue distress or hardship on others.  And its true, that we sometimes make decisions that adversely affect others.  But if we totally ignore their feelings and ideas then we would not be fulfilling our commitments or obligation to make this world a better place.

I solemnly believe that we should take more than ourselves into account when making certain decisions.  We can never be completely sure who may be affected by what we do.
