Hotaru appears first in SailormoonS. She is a frail looking school girl that seems to be sick a lot. All the kids at school avoid her because of her sickly appearence. Her only friend is Reeny (ChibiUsa) whom she met when Reeny retrived her lost hat. Later that day a daimon (monster) appeared, and Reeny wanted to transform but couldn't because Hotaru was there. They hid in the bushes instead, but the daimon spotted them and started after them. Reeny pushed Hotaru out of the way, but the daimon caught her. Sailormoon and Sailorpluto appeared and there was a short battle between them. When this was over Reeny returned to Hotaru and collapsed. Seeing Reeny was injured, Hotaru used her healing powers to restore her. Hotaru explained to Reeny about her power and how most people thought it was "gross" but Reeny found it to be a great power.
Professor Tomoe, Hotaru's father, became possessed with a demon and collected heart crystals to summon Pharoah Ninety. In the meantime, Hotaru was weakened by an evil presence called Mistress9 that takes over her body. Mistess9 needed power to the point where it stole ChibiUsa's heart crystal for energy. Neptune and Uranus then attacked Tomoe. The demon was released from him and destroyed. Tomoe went back to his orginal state but then Mistress9 tricked him to get the HolyGrail. Then Mistress9 recieved the grail she summoned Pharoah Nintey and thus the nuclear (silent) winter begun. Meanwhile, inside Mistress9 Hotaru struggled to free herself from the evil entity. She regained power when she was flooded with memories of her past and then she tranformed into Sailorsaturn. She then used her "Death Reborn Revolution!" to kill Pharoah Ninety.
SailorMoonStars
Hotaru is a baby in the first episode of SailormoonStars. She is in her crib when she has a vision of Eternal Sailormoon, where a darkness is approaching and will take over the white moon. Pluto appears and tells Professor Tomoe that it she needs to bring Hotaru to the future. Later the scouts see bright lights in the sky that they think to be a metor shower but is really Neherenia. Hotaru, being in danger, then sends out a purple force killing the daimon about to attack her. The OuterScoutsi then combine their powers and kill off the rest of the daimons. Hotaru then grows to a girl of 4 years old. She then tells them the same dream she had as a baby, being that a darkness is aproaching and evil will take over.
They take her home with them to live and find she is growing yet more rapidly, and her mind was also increasing greatly. But that night while in bed she is confronted by the spirit of Sailorsaturn. Sailorsaturn puts her finger to Hotaru' forehead and reminds her of her past in SailormoonS. She is then transformed into a girl of 16 years and fully Sailorsaturn.
Hotaru was raised by her only father because her mother died when she was very young. She is quite weak in human form, and often suffers from illnesses. Her only friend is Chibiusa (Reeny).
She also has a weak body. She can exhaust herself much quicker than any normal person, partly as a tradeoff to her ability to heal.
As Sailor Saturn, she is not her normal, well spirited self. As the vessel for the entity known as Mistress Nine, her only goal is to destroy all life on Earth. She also wields the fearsome power,the Silence Glaive. She can use the weapon to slice through anything that gets in her way.
