| 10. Green Army Men - Although I didn't have that many, these little guys could keep me busy for hours. And they eventually led to an overwhelming passion I had for G.I. Joe figures. 9. Tic-Tac-Toe - Such a simple game and yet it does a great job of teaching you early on in life about basic strategic concepts. 8. Marco Polo - Growing up we always had a pool and for some reason this is the game that sticks in my mind the most. Well this and the game where one person sits on the tire tube and everyone else tried to dunk them till they fall off it. 7. Kick-ball - This one time we even played with a beat-up old basketball, which was going fine until my sister cracked some guy's windshield. 6. Fumbe-Dumble - Yeah, most people may not have heard of this one. It was a simple game really. One kid tried to hold onto the football and run around a bit while the other kids tok their best shots. 5. Dodge-ball - Don't think I have to say much on this one. 4. Water balloon fights - Nothing beat it on a hot summer day, well maybe opening up a fire hydrant. 3. Wiffle-ball - Well I was never a big baseball fan, but playing those games in our driveway were a whole lot of fun. Especially the fact that hitting our neighbor's second floor windows constituted a home-run. 2. Paper football - Hell, me and my friends love this game so much that we still play it on the side when we get together for poker games. Although maybe the fact that we're betting on it ruins the memory a bit. 1. SEA BATTLE - I'm sure most of you won't remember this game and I'm not really sure I have the right name for it. Here's how it went: (a) you take a piece of paper and fold it in half; (b) each person gets on half and draws a bunch of battle ships; (c) in alternating turns, each kid draws a small black circle on their half of the paper and then fold the sheet over and rub the back of the circle to create an imprint on the other kid's half - this is how you fire on their ships; (d) the first kid to successfully sink all of the other kid's ships wins!!! Its basically a low-tech version of Battle Ship. |
| OK so by now you've figured out that I'm somewhat nostalgic. In case you needed any more proof the below list illustrates some of the best diversions a kid could ever have had. And what's more, none of them involve a Nintendo Gameboy or really cost anything. |
