This summer, the Piedmont Youth Bagpipe Band bid farewell to four of its founding members, Suzan Karayel, Amara Reddick, Trent Tai, and Nadia Krasner, who all graduated from Piedmont High School on June 15. They will all be missed, and are wished good luck in their college pursuits.

The band is always looking for new members. Young people in the Piedmont area who may be interested in learning to play bagpipes or drums are encouraged to contact Sally Reddick at [email protected].

Band History

The mascot of Piedmont, California, has always been the Scottish Highlander. As early as 1927, Piedmont High School had a bagpipe band, which would play at football games and other community events. In the 1960's, however, the band fell apart. There was an attempt in the mid 1970's to bring it back, but it failed. The second revival attempt came in 1999, and for almost five years, the band has been working its way back into Piedmont culture.

This latest incarnation of the band traveled to Scotland in 2000, where they played among over 8,500 other pipers and drummers in the Marie Curie Millenium March, the largest massed bands gathering ever at the time. The band also had a chance to meet with the Lord Provosts of Edinburgh and Glasgow, and even His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales.

Currently, the Piedmont Youth Bagpipe Band regularly plays at Piedmont High football games and in the Piedmont Fourth of July parade, as well as many other various community events. Many of the current members are also involved with the Prince Charles Pipe Band, a reputable competition band based in San Francisco.
