Break for the Finish

Week 15: After a shortened week 15 due to the Major League Baseball All-Star Break, there are only two weeks left in the regular season and there are still 10 teams in the hunt for the PWFBL's six playoff spots. Two teams in the thick of the playoff battle are the Michigan Twinkies and the Atlanta Force facing off this week.

At the beginning of the season, this was one of the highlighted weeks for both teams, who's owners are never short of words. The Force came out on top in the shortened week 204-184, however Michigan did not make it easy on them come Sunday night. Atlanta came out, in no other words than, with full Force. Their hitting was on, and they had outstanding pitching early.

"Big time players come out in big games," the Colonel stated all week, "It's amazing what one can accomplish when one tries. I have been waiting for this week ever since I showed Sideshow who his daddy was. Now, its time to gear up and win me a champ-e-on-ship, YEE HAW!"
The press corp was shocked as they witnessed this grown man jump on his mechanical "penny" horse (the Atlanta Press room always must have one there after a win) and play "bucking bronco" while shouting in his Texas drawl. They followed up with questions regarding the lack of progress his other fantasy baseball properties (specifically in Diamond Wizard's Pennent Chase (DWPC)) have accomplished this season. Mr. Harper quickly pointed out that this is not the time nor the place to be talking about those teams.

The Twinkies had a rough few days. The bats were cold and the pitching had a lot to be desired. Recent pick-up Jason Johnson was not able to make the trip to Atlanta and will instead start his first game against the Skunks in week 16. Sunday though was another story. The Twinkies started a rally led by Schilling and a hot Lieter, they burned up the 60 point lead that the Force had built on them the previous three days. Eighty points wasn't enough and now the Twinkies are left with a tougher road to the playoffs than they had imagined even a month prior.

Atlanta travels to Chicago to complete their third game of the season next week. The Force believe they are the best team in the Pluto and feel snubbed that they have too sorry of a division record to challenge for the title. It will be an interesting finish to the season in the Pluto. Will this be the first time in PWFBL history that a division winner doesn't have the best overall record in the division?

Hummels Wharf 192, Miami 141
The Hustlers have been on a roll the past few weeks and felt they needed to win out with a chance to make it to the playoffs. With a recent win over fantasy point leader Seattle, Miami thought they had a real chance to knock off the first place team. It wasn't the case, as the Braves held the lead almost the entire week. With the win and the Michigan and Guam losses, Hummels Wharf clinched a playoff spot with their eleven wins. A win next week, and a Seattle loss, will secure the Mars division and a first round bye. The Hustlers need some help still, but they are very much in the race with both the Twinkies and Monkies on the snide.

Rocko 115, Chicago 73
Two division leaders collide in a game that may have serious playoff implications. With the Bengals win, they move up into a tie with Chicago for the one of the first round playoff byes. Both teams did not get off the ground in the shortened week. Chicago has a tough road ahead, as the play the hot and disgruntled Atlanta squad. Rocko will have a desperate Wisconsin team, still holding out hopes for a playoff spot.

Wisconsin 161, Guam 110
Speaking of the Wannabes, they are still alive and kicking. Even if they don't make the playoffs, they seemed determined to play the spoiler role and make it hard on the rest of the teams to try and get their themselves. This loss hit Guam hard, who now falls into a tied with the Michigan Twinkies for the last wild card spot. With tough games against Miami and Chicago ahead of them, they are hoping for a Twinkie squashing to keep their hopes alive.

Cranville 163, Seattle 88
The surprise team of the last couple weeks has to be the Euchres. After polishiing off Chicago with an impressive 289 points in week 14, they come back after the All-star Break and put a whoop'n on the fantasy point leader. This seriously puts a damper on Seattle's drive to make the playoffs, as they have two very tough teams ahead of them, and 4 teams nipping at their heels. Cranville travels to Providence next week and try to make it three in a row against the hot Providence Plague and knock them out of playoff contention.

Providence 186, Dundee 61
The Dundee Hillbillies have become the laughing stock of PWFBL. Many refer to them as the built in bye week for all those who get to play them. This is just what the doctor ordered for the Plague, who need every win they can get to hold onto their small wild card and Division crown hopes. Dundee looks to gain some respect next week by taking on Hummels Wharf and get their first division win of the year.
