Plague Claims Another Victim Week 20: From the 2004 draft to even halfway through the Sol Series, the Providence Plague had their doubters. Ridiculed for some of her picks and the errors in the draft, Providence did not look like a contender for the PWFBL trophy this year. At 3-6 midway through the season, many wrote her off. A hot 6-2 finish capped off with a 171 point victory over the regular season champion, Hummels Wharf Braves, made Libzie a champion. The week did not start off well for the Plague, as they struggled to overcome the near 40 point lead that the Braves accumlilated over the first two days. The game completely shifted on thursday when quiet bats and bad pitching overcame the Hummels Wharf staff. This inspired the Providence players and gave them hope against the high powered Braves offense. Oustanding pitching from O. Perez and Marquis erased the entire Hummels Wharf lead. Providence followed the next day with great pitching out of the Big Unit, who accounted for almost half of the Plagues 74 points on Friday. A horrible outing by Harden friday erased any good memories Lima-time would have instilled in Pennsylvania. Although Bonds and Prior tried to bring the Braves back, points left on the bench and a red hot Plague team was too much to overcome as Providence defeated Hummels Wharf 326 to 154. There are a lot of shocked owners in the league. Those that had never played against women before called it, "divine intervention" while others chanted, "Go Willa". When corrected that it was in-fact Libzie that owned the Plague, "Oh, my bad, Go Libz!" he continued, "This is a nice change of pace from always playing male competators, it brings a different feel to the game." Many wrote off the Venus division as a way to shelter the women from the big boys. "It's great to see a woman win the Sol Series," two time runner-up Sue said after the game, "after coming up short the last couple years, us ladies needed to flex our muscle and show those guys how baseball is played." Bob was unavailable for comment after the scores were final. Rumor has it he has refocused his energy on his football franchise in PWFFL and taken to the links to get his mind off is disappointing baseball finish. The Braves will probably come in with a new look next year, as Mr. Pinter has already stated that Braves pitching staple Mark Prior is on the trading block this offseason. With such a limited number of protected players and his dissapointing play this season, it will come as no surprise to this reporter if Prior will be a cutting room floor casuality.
The commissioners office released a statement Monday thanking all of the owners for a great 2004 Puck's World Fantasy Baseball League Season. The highs and lows and the surprising outcome was great for the league. It was great to see a struggling team halfway through the season tear up the league and win it all. To have the personal drama throughout the season between Atlanta and Hummels Wharf to come to a peaceful resolution by the season end was remarkable. Commissioner Puck will be looking at applications for the upcoming 2005 season, as it is a strong possibility one to four franchises could be looking for new owners come spring training. Also, there are possible rule changes that could be installed before the 2005 season with the possibility of expanding the protection limit for the 2006 draft.
