2004: Year of Expansion
Puck's World Fantasy Baseball League (PWFBL) is entering a new era in 2004. After a humble resurrection last year with six teams, PWFBL will enter the season with twelve teams and three divisions. Joining the six returning teams of Michigan Twinkies, Wisconsin Wannabes, Hummels Wharf Braves, Providence Plague, Seattle Skunks, and Rocko Leopards are the new teams of Chicago Cubsbartmen, Cranville Euchres, Dundee Hillbillies, Miami Hustlers, Atlanta Force. A new but old face returns to PWFBL as the sixth and final expansion team, the Funky Monkies of Guam.
The Expansion draft was held monday in which the six expansion teams were able to select four players (two pitchers and two batters) that finished the 2003 season on a PWFBL roster. Now all twelve teams are on equal footing heading into the PWFBL draft which will be held Sunday March 14th. Here's a close up look at the newest owners of PWFBL.
Chicago Cubsbartmen
Brother-in-law of fellow PWFBL member Sue of the Wisconsin Wannabes, Jason brings another franchise to the city of Chicago. The first franchise, the Chicago Circus Freaks in 1999, did not fair too well mostly due to horrible ownership issues. Jason will attempt to bring class to a city that hasn't won a major title in nearly 20 years. Jason brings to the table a strong knowledge of both baseball and fantasy sports. He plans to take home the first crown of the new Pluto Division with his franchise players of J. Washburn, I. Suzuki, I. Rodriguez, and star pitcher J. Vazquez. Jason plans to stay in town longer than his team's namesake.
Cranville Euchres
The rookie of the bunch, owner Angela has never played fantasy baseball before. She will have a tough road ahead of her as she plays in the Venus Division with PWFBL runner-up Wisconsin and, another playoff team from 2003, the Providence Plague. Angela's background is as a great football pick'em player and plans to use this baseball league as a way to warm herself up in Puck's World Fantasy Sports, Inc (PWFSI) with hopes to earn a spot in PWFFL's second league starting this fall. Angela's first team includes C. Delgado, B. Wagner, B. Colon, and B. Abreu. This is a solid unit that she feels confident enough to, "let it ride".
Dundee Hillbillies
Chad's first taste of PWFSI action will be one of certain challenge. He was dealt into the toughest division, Mars. He's up to the challenge as Chad has been one of the more excited members in the expansion class. With his fantasy sports background, he should be in good shape to hang with the defending PWFBL champion. The Hillbillies selected C. Jones, T. Wakefield, J. Posada, and ace pitcher M. Mussina in the expansion draft to anchor his team for 2004. Although a Mars title is a longshot, he has the ability to post numbers that will put him in the running for a wildcard spot.
Miami Hustlers
The Hustlers have been brought into town by none other than the big Pimp himself, Dre. Dre has been a fellow competitor with commissioner Puck for the past two season in Fun Time Fantasy Football League, capturing the league championship in 2002. Dre is also a member of another fantasy baseball league, Diamond Wizards Pennant Chase (DWPC). In his sophomore season of fantasy baseball, Dre vows to be much improved from his 8th place showing in DWPC. In PWFBL, he has already proved this by securing the services of a great crew in players B. Zito, R. Oswalt, E. Chaves, and B. Boone. Dre plans on partying with the ladies after a championship run in his rookie season.
Atlanta Force
One of the most decorated owners of the class of 2004 is the "Colonel" Chris Harper. Of course, he's the most decorated at talking smack. The Colonel hosts the DWPC baseball league that Dre also belongs to, leading to a natural rivalry with the fellow Pluto Division member. Chris is an accomplished fantasy football player also, recently capturing the IYDFFL championship in 2003. Chris has already purchased the polish to go along with the PWFBL trophy and with players such as M. Mulder, J. Thome, P. Wilson, and T. Hudson he may have a ligit shot at the title. On the other hand, he may end up giving Wisconsin a run for her money for the title, choke artist of the league.
Funky Monkies of Guam
The most recognizable member of the class of 2004 is owner Jock. Jock has long been a member of PWFSI and holds tenured ownership in PWFFL with the Timbuktu Buccaneers. The Funky Monkies of Guam are not a new team, but a resurrected team from the 1999 Season of PWFBL. The monkies from Guam turned in an impressive outing last time they were in the league and after securing the services of M. Tejada, M. Rivera, K. Brown, and E. Renteria they look to be prepared for another run at the playoffs and the Pluto Division Crown.
