Braves "Wannabe" Undefeated, But Come Up Short
Week 4:
The battle between the PWFBL's two undefeated teams wasn't the slugfest it was supposed to be, but there was enough drama both on and off the field to make it interesting in Week 4.
The trash-talking began early between the Wisconsin Wannabes and Hummels Wharf Braves, both 3-0 heading into their highly-touted head-to-head matchup with each other. Braves owner Bob praised his team's "swing-for-the-fences" mentality while the 'Bees' Sue pointed out that her pitching corps has been top-notch.
As has been the norm, the Braves burst out of the gate behind Jeff Bagwell and Alfonso Soriano's power. Chipper Jones broke out of a slump to help Hummels Wharf early on. But after scoring 82 points on Friday (the most by either team during the week), Bob once again gave his team the weekend off. This time, it proved to be costly as Alex Rodriguez homered on Saturday to keep the Wannabes close. On Sunday, he buried the Braves, going 5-for-5 with two doubles and 6 RBI. It was a bitter pill to swallow for Bob, whose pitching staff could only muster up two wins during the week. "Hey, at least my Tigers tripled their win total," he joked during Sunday's press conference.
In other news, the Michigan Twinkies made it official by signing shortstop Miguel Tejada and giving slumping second baseman Roberto Alomar his walking papers. Tejada was given the weekend to move into his new pad in Kalamazoo, but it didn't matter as Michigan beat up on the Rocko Leopards to make it two wins in a row.
Meanwhile, Providence Plague owner Libzie continues to look for the right combination of players to bring her out of her early-season skid. She may have found it in Week 4, as the Plague handed Seattle another loss while Libzie cracked the 300-point plateau.
The Plague has since dumped four players including John Olerud and Ray Durham in favor of four new faces that include closer Mike MacDougal, who has been off to a hot start.
