Murdering Teens: What Should Happen to Them?

Teen murderers. What should happen to them? In New York State, a court cannot sentence a person who commits a murder when under the age of eighteen to death. New York should change this law. A way we can at least try to stop this growing problem. The growing problem is that kids are murdering. It must stop. Teen murderers should be held responsible for their crimes.

Right now, 3,000 men and women sit on death row in the United States. Eighty of those 3,000 were under eighteen when they committed murder. The history of capital punishment in the US dates back as far as 1692. Since that time, over 300 minors have been put to death for their crimes. It is not nearly as common now as it was years before.

Although crime overall is down in recent years, murderers under eighteen has become an increasing problem over recent years. In other states, such as Alabama or Texas, a minor can be put to death. In most underage murderer situations, the convict argues that because he was sixteen or seventeen he cannot be held responsible for his actions. They say things like, "I'm too young to understand right from wrong." Are you kidding me? My little brother understands the simple concept of right and wrong. And he's six! What these murders say is absurd. The basic things in life require the understanding of what is right and what is wrong. If a murderer doesn't know right from wrong by sixteen, there is no hope for rehabilitation.

Another reason why the state should repeal this law is that it is too expensive to rehabilitate someone who probably doesn't care in the first place. If they cared, they should have never committed the crime in the first place. We live in a place with a declining economy. By trying to rehabilitate someone, who doesn't care about anyone but himself or herself, is throwing good tax dollars, our tax dollars, down the tubes. Why should pay for some murderer to live?

Anyone under eighteen in New York State cannot be sentenced to die for any crime. Crime is down, but the teen murderer number is on the rise. In order to prevent this problem, New York State should repeal this absurd law.
