| Frequently Asked Questions Please read this section BEFORE calling a PVYA representative with questions. How do I sign up? Registration is held Oct. 11 and Oct. 18 from 9am- 1pm at the PVHS new gym. You may also fill out the forms found on this website and mail them prior to October 18. There will be no late registration this year. Registration fees must be paid at the time of registration. If your child has never played in the program or if your child was in 7/8 instructional last year, you MUST bring a COPY (that we can keep) of your child's birth certificate to registration. I gave you my child's birth certificate last year, do I have to do it again? No. If you already gave us a copy of your child's birth certificate, we still have it on file. Anyone who played 7 & 8 instructional who didn't bring a copy of their birth certificate and all new players must bring a copy of their birth certificate to registration. How much does it cost? $35 for 7/8 instructional, $60 for U9 intramural and $80 for competitive. Can I get a discount for multiple children? The first two siblings are full price. Siblings after that are 1/2 price. Parents who have "legal custody" of a child other than their own must show proof. How long is the season? The U9 Intramural and U10-U15 Competitive programs begin in mid-November. Intramural should be finished by mid-February and Competitive finishes in mid-March. U15s finish by the end of February with the championship tournament (free and open to the public) hosted at PV on February 28 & March 1, 2009. The younger competitive division teams that make it to the playoffs could be playing into the beginning of April. There are no games over the Christmas break, but there are practices. The 7 & 8 Instructional program runs for eight weeks, beginning January 10. They will skip one Saturday for a scheduled PVE event and "snow days" are built into the program. Parents are not allowed in the gym during practice time for 7/8 since there are so many players on the floor at one time. Parents are invited into the gym for scrimmages. When are practices? Practices could be held any day of the week at PVE, PVI, MS or HS. PVYA is given gym time at various times through out the week and PVYA personnel try to schedule teams to have at least 2 practices a week. There are Saturday and Sunday practices. Sundays start after 12 noon, Saturdays are all day. Weekdays are 6- 7:25pm or 7:30- 8:55pm. Since PVYA does not receive many 6pm time slots due to school activities, that time is reserved mostly for U9. There is no set schedule of the same days every week. Can I request a certain team? All returning competitive players will be placed on the same team each year unless the coach is no longer coaching or the parent has a legitimate concern about the child being on that team. New players will be assigned as needed to complete teams. PVYA does NOT allow players to switch from one team to another because the other team has a bettwe "season record." This is considered "team stacking" and is not tolerated. Coaches who engage in this conduct will be removed from the PVYA program. All U9 players will be placed on teams evenly according to ability. 7/8 instructional are grouped by age and divided into teams randomly. What is the purpose of the U9 intramural program? The U9, or 9-year-old intramural program, is an "in-house" program where PV teams only play against other PV teams. All practices and games are held at PV. The purpose of this newly added program is to keep more children involved in basketball. PVYA found that we had great numbers for the instructional program, but the numbers dropped for U9 competitive. Parents told us their 9 year old children were too young to be traveling to away games. PVYA responded with the U9 intramural program. I don't want to travel, can my older child play with the U9 program? No. PVYA's programs are age specific- the age of the child as of September 1. If your child's age changed on September 2, that child can still play with the lower age group. If the child's age changed on August 31, the child must play with the older age group. The organization is working to offer intramurals for older children in the future. However, with the constraints on gym availability, it just isn't possible at this point in time. Why do the older kids travel? This program has been a part of the CBL (Community Basketball League) longer than any of the current officers and coaches can remember! The CBL offers a large, highly competitive league so our players can grow and be competitive when they move on to school programs. Another reason is that PVYA does not generate enough teams in each division to keep an in-house program, nor do we receive enough gym time to support that type of program. My child has no interest in the school team, why must he/she still travel? CBL is the closest league for us to join. Most Monroe County programs are in-house and some do not offer the age range we offer (up to age 15). The PV school district is not large enough to offer in-house programs for all age groups, nor are we able to access the facilities for the amount of time required to run such in-house programs. |
