Elias Rector[Frederick (1750-1811), John (1711- 1777), Hans Jacob (1674-1729)] was the first of the Rectors  who came to the state or Arkansas (or territory then) , about 1818 as a surveyor. He had been in Missouri and Illinois previously, and was one of nine brothers, born in Fauquier County, Virginia, several of whom went westward with the tide of immigration then sweeping into the Missouri Valley.  Elias Rector served as Colonel of the Illinois militia from 1812 to 1814, and later as postmaster at Saint Louis. He filed the first land claim in Hot Springs, January 17, 1819. In 1821 he was elected to State Senate of Missouri.
Henry Massie Rector [Elias, Frederick, John, Hans Jacob]  came to Little Rock, in 1835. He served as teller in the State bank, as U. S. marshal, as  surveyor general for Arkansas, as a member of the legislature, as judge of the supreme court, and was Civil War governor.

On  April 22, 1861, he responded to the demand on Arkansas by the Secretary of War, for troops to "put down the rebellion," as follows:

"In answer to your requisition for troops from Arkansas to subjugate the Southern states, I have to say that none will be furnished. The demand is only adding insult to injury. The people of this commonwealth are freemen, not slaves, and will defend to the last extremity, their honor, lives and property against Northern mendacity and usurpation."

Next he  seized the arsenal at Little Rock and the fort at Fort Smith, together with all the arms, ammunitions, and stores contained therein.  Rector  was a member of the military board which raised and equiped 40 regiments for the Confederate Army.

Upon  leaving the office of Governor, he joined the reserve corps. of the Confederate Army, refusing a quartermaster's place, and served as a private until the close of the war. For several years after the close of the hostilities, he was engaged in farming and in 1874 was sent to the Constitutional Convention from Garland  County.  He built the first bath house in Hot Springs.

He died in Little Rock in August 1899, in the old family home. Three days before his death he joined the Methodist Church.
