6. Joel Mauck
"Joel Mauck was a son of Abraham, oldest son of Daniel Mauck and his first wife, Barbara Harnsberger. He probably became a Miller's apprentice at an early age, as he and his brother John went to Rockingham County with his grandmother's people to learn the milling business.
He was employed in the Dry Run mills, and his branding iron for barrels used at this mill is preserved by Philip M. Kauffman, a grandson. He later operated the Meadow Mills on the Hawksbill owned by Joseph Grove.
In 1826, he leased the mill on the Shenandoah River belonging to the heirs of Joseph Rhodes, dec'd eventually becoming the owner of purchasing the title from the heirs ranging in dtes from 1827 to 1845. He suffered many reverses in business. His shipping partner (they marketed the flour by flat boats, gondolas; on the Shenandoah River) on marketing a large shipment skipped to parts unknown.
As the shipment was made up of flour belonging to different parties, he, as a partner of the shipping contract, was held responsible.
A deed of trust was executed in which his knives and forks were listed. This was satisfied in due time.
On his latter days he witnessed the destruction of the mill by fire. On Oct. 2, 1864, a party of Hunter's raiders came into the county burning barns and mills, containing wheat or flour, with the object of cutting off supplies for the Confederate Army. The barn of his widowed daughter [the mother of Philip M. Kauffman] standing about 150 yards from the mill was also burning at the same time.
He rebuilt the mill soon after the war closed, but this was not the only time, for the terrible flood of Sep. 19, 1870, carried it away together with barrels of flour and many bushels of wheat and other grain. He took into partnership his son Robert and a new mill was soon erected in 1871 and put into operation. " -Philip M. Kauffman
----------------
Mary S. Brubaker heard her mother and her mother's sister (Aunt Bettie) speak many times of the flood. They said on that awful night of the flood their brother Robert came into the house carrying a pine torch and said in five minutes the water will be around the mill.Aunt Bettie said we do not have any flour in the house; so she and my mother hurried to get pans and buckets and rushed to the mills and when they got there a tiny stream of water had just started around the mill and when they came back out they had to wade. Uncle Robert took up two barrels of flour, one on each hip, and carried them out a little ways from the mill to a hill - something he never had done or never could do again, was to lift two barrels of flour at the same time. Joel Mauck and his wife were members of Mill Creek, Primitive Baptist Church.
In the Mill Creek Minute Book of the Mill Creek Church are the following entries:
Received by baptism since association of 1823. Joel Mauck Polly Mauck
