Bartlesville, Oklahoma On Approach to Final

This is one of my favorite photos. It was taken while on Final to landing at Frank Phillips Field in Bartlesville, Okloahoma where I was going to display my Air-Bike at the '02 Tulsa Regional Fly-In. The smoke over the runway is from three planes doing their smoke passes prior to my arrival. I had to power up and get on the ground before they came around again and ran me over! At great risk to dropping it, I held my 35mm reflex camera upside down in my left hand (to get a low angle relative to the engine) and just shot in the general direction. I was amazed at the results. (Sometimes even the blind pig gets a truffle)

Looking backwards at my own smoke makes for an interesting perspective too.

Dawn is a great time to take off, the air is still and cool, the chickens are crowing and the long rays of the sun make it all seem so peaceful. Flying is a wonderful experience!

A dawn departure into the cool Kansas air during the Fall means you'd better bundle up to stay warm. My Dry-Rider motorcycle suit is the final layer of protection against the wind and cool air. It will be two hours before I land in Bartlesville and there are no airports between there and Derby, KS. Adequate personal protection is as important as doing a thorough pro-flight.
