THE RIDDLER

"I am a woman of few words, but many riddles."

Edwina Nygma was a computer and electronics genius who was fascinated with puzzles and riddles since childhood. Extremely intelligent and a bit odd., she would cheat at school and feel superior to her classmates. Nygma's obsession and love for committing crimes lead her to don the disguise of "The Riddler." Her transformation allows her to lose all sense of reality. She becomes completely wrapped up in the evil and criminal behavior which is warping her mind. She needs to be the Riddler to truly express the real Edwina, in turn completely separating herself from any normalcy she once had. The Riddler uses a vast array of computer and electronic gizmos in her arsenal, but is best known for the lethal use of her "?" cane. It is sher trademark. When her plans are ultimately foiled by Batguy, The Riddler's hatred turns to an obsession to outwit and ultimately destroy Batguy. Her hatred is fueled by the surprising intellect Batguy posses, which leads to her solving of Edwina's riddles. Her twisted mind is only concerned with creating the ultimate riddle related crime, which Batguy can never solve.

Oooh, who could possibly forget ther green-clad genius of the glittering screen? Her brilliance made her one of the most serious threats to the Dynamic Duo, and her insane sense of humour made her the most entertaining! Not only was she the first villain in the series, she was one of the few (if there were any others, which I doubt) to have more than one set of clothing for capers. She had the green and lavender (yack) skintight outfit, and the three-piece suit, which was far more elegant (imho).

The Riddler has Four Qualities:

Depth - Sadly, we learn very little about her past from her many episodes. She is quite far around the bend, but is consistant: she's brilliant, loves her work, and wants everything to go perfectly. she is genuinely offended by a suggestion that her riddles are a waste of time, and takes pride in her successful capers.

Talent - Even Batguy has admitted that the Riddler is very good at what she does. The Riddler concots what she needs for her various nefarious deeds, from instant unbreakable glue to sleeping-gas candles. she occaisionally smuggles materials in, but puts tshem to brilliant use. She selects her cohorts carefully, although the criminal work force in Gotham City generally leaves quite a bit to be desired.

Restraint - A rare quality in BatVillains, the Riddler is actually possessed of some restraint. She is able to act completely normal when she needs to, and doesn't kill when she doesn't have to. Her patience with her slow-witted henchmen is miraculous.

Location - Where could the Riddler exist but in the Bat Universe? She is larger than life, over the top, delightfully insane -- and only in a world where punches make a POW! Light up the screen and people actually say things like "golly!" and "To the BatPhone!" could she be anything other than ridiculous. But here she is frightening. Unlike many BatVillains, she is actually believable as a threat to the safety of the world.
