Ch. 25 Review Questions

  1. Four main motives  of the Imperialists were Economic interests, Political and Military interests, Humanitarian and Religious goals, and Empire builders and critics. Social Darwinism also arose in this time.
  2. The Berlin conference was held in Africa but no Africans were invited. It agreed that European power could not claim any part of Africa unless it had set up a government office there. European powers almost took over all of Africa.
  3. Ethiopia set up roads and planned for battles by the ruler Menelik II. He imported weapons and European officers to help for and train Ethiopian armies.
  4. Ferdinand de Lesseps organized a company to build the Suez Canal. It is a 100 mile waterway that links the Mediterranean and the Red seas which shorted the route from Europe to south and east Asia.  
  5. Unpopular moves in East India brought upon the Sepoy Rebellion. The first of these moves were that sepoys were required, and the second was a law that was passed that allowed Hindu widows to re-marry.
  6. China’s relations with the western world were transformed by two developments: China entering a period of Decline, and the Industrial Revolution created a need for expanded markets for European goods.
  7. The goal of the Boxer Uprising was to drive out the “foreign devils” who were polluting the land with their un-Chinese ways, strange buildings , machines , and telegraph lines.
