25 Review Questions
- Four main motives of the Imperialists were Economic
interests, Political and Military interests, Humanitarian and Religious
goals, and Empire builders and critics. Social Darwinism also arose in
this time.
- The Berlin
conference was held in Africa but no Africans were
invited. It agreed that European power could not claim any part of Africa
unless it had set up a government office there. European powers almost
took over all of Africa.
- Ethiopia
set up roads and planned for battles by the ruler Menelik
II. He imported weapons and European officers to help for and train
Ethiopian armies.
- Ferdinand de Lesseps
organized a company to build the Suez Canal. It is
a 100 mile waterway that links the Mediterranean
and the Red seas which shorted the route from Europe
to south and east Asia.
- Unpopular moves in East India
brought upon the Sepoy Rebellion. The first of
these moves were that sepoys were required, and
the second was a law that was passed that allowed Hindu widows to
re-marry.
- China’s
relations with the western world were transformed by two developments: China
entering a period of Decline, and the Industrial Revolution created a need
for expanded markets for European goods.
- The goal of the Boxer Uprising was to drive out the “foreign
devils” who were polluting the land with their un-Chinese ways, strange buildings , machines , and telegraph lines.
