>>RESPONSE TO MR. HASKELL

The Middle Ages were dark times in which there were many fights, battles and conquests. That is also why it is referred to as the Dark Ages. There were many wars and battles during this period of time. A shortage on rights between one another, a common cause for battle was land. Religion was not big throughout the land. There was hardly any religious tension. Almost all connections between two or more places broke apart. It was almost a free for all, where everyone was for themselves not caring about anyone but themselves. This time was defiantly a dark time.

Violence was a big part in this era in time. There were many battles, wars, and fights. A main cause for these violent wars was land. Emperors wanted big empires to rule. Big empires require a lot of land and a lot of people; a civilization. Brutal fights between two or more empires resulted in the death of hundreds to thousands of people. The winner would gain more land adding to his empire, while the loser lost all or some of his land putting that empire lower on the ranking of top empires.

Empires varied in sizes from huge to small. People that lived in these empires sometimes traded with other traders and merchants from other empires. This helped the living of people from place to place.

All of the death, violence, and fighting all add together so that we can say that this era, the middle age, or dark age, can be called dark.

I agree that the middle ages could be called the Dark Age because of the plagues. There were may plagues in the Middle Ages. These plagues did horrible things to people and the civilization or empire that the people lived in. Some plagues were deadly but others were not. Plagues traveled through the people and their empires doing horrible things. I believe that the Middle age can also be called the Dark age is because of the violence and deaths of this time. Battles between empires and barbarians over things like land for their empires. Empires were important. The bigger empire or civilization that you lived in the safer you were. Battles, big or small, long or short, could last a really long time, some about 100 years. Many people were injured in these battles or wars while leaving a huge amount of people dead all for the war over land.  The fights were very brutal and the no one really cared about anything except for winning the war.

Both the plagues and wars, can be a reason for calling the Middle Ages a dark age. Another idea is the free for all world. In this time every empire was for them selves. There were no real laws outside of the empire. Emperors could command conquests to take over land and claim it their own. They could also order the overtaking of someone else’s land.
