Traditional music and dancing play a prominent role in the cultural life of the United Arab Emirates. It is common to see colourful displays of folkloric dancers at a wide variety of occasions, such as sporting events, weddings, and national festivals. The style of dancing most frequently seen is known as the Ayyala tradition. Rows of male dancers, accompanied by traditional instruments such as the drums or Tubool, recreate a battle using sticks as swords, while the dance movements themselves weave a story of the combat. The women, dressed in their attractive traditional costumes with their long black hair flowing gracefully with the music, perform the Na'ashat. |

The houbara bustard is the traditional prey species of falconers in the United Arab Emirates. This Asian species migrates to the Arabian peninsula every winter and when numbers declined researchers at the National Avian Research Centre in Abu Dhabi developed a sophisticated satellite tracking system to learn more about the bird's migration routes. One particular bird was tracked for 2,765 kilometres when it flew from the UAE, through Iran, to the border regions of Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekhistan. This pioneering research has contributed greatly to the preservation of this important species, and captive breeding programmes have been established in the UAE, with the enthusiastic support of the country's ruler and foremost conservationist, HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al Nahyan. |

The Indian roller preys on small invertebrates and lizards and is often seen perching for long periods in search of its food species. During courtship the roller climbs high into the sky before tumbling and rolling in the characteristic display that gives it its common name. It nests in trees or buildings using twigs and other vegetation to build its nest. In March or April a clutch of three to five eggs is laid. |

Herds of wild Arabian oryx were once a common sight in the UAE, but are now officially categorised as an endangered species by the World Conservation Union (IUCN). With its almost white, horse-like body, and two long straight horns, which appear to merge as one in profile, the Arabian oryx easily conjures up images of the legendary unicorn. |
