Yerry History and Culture
Note: The Rebecca listed as a child of John and Maria is not theirs, she is
daughter of Michael Yerry. Also,
Henry G. Yerry should be listed twice as John's, but is listed once.I have an older version of Tree Maker and When I tried to correct, it wouldn't.

John Yerry was born in 1754  When he was 18, came to the colonies with the british to fight in the Revolutionary War in 1776. They landed in Manhatten Island. A short time after being here he defected ( as many others did) and came into the american ranks and took up arms against the British.  He severed the the American Army for 5 years, then later he joined the Dutches Militia.
After all his armed services he began his journey up the Hudson River to the small community of Rhinebeck where he  found employment with a farmer named 'Cramer' whom was also german by birth.
He continued living in Dutches county for 4 years.then heard of 'Olde Esopus' ( a town named after Klyne Esopus) so he crossed the Hudson to see the area. From there he found his way to Woodstock, settleing down near the village on the bearsville road. He lived fifteen years on this leased land, then moved to park Hollow, there he lived for two years. Then decided to move to Red Hills, midway between Woodstock and Bearsville.  A creek ran through this area , it was to the south of this , that he and his wife , Anna Mariah (or maria) Schultes would spend the rest of thier days.
When the war of 1812-1814 (Civil War) broke out,two of the old veterens son's John and Henry voluntered
to go to Stanten Island for two years. Henry at that time was 23 and John Jr was 19 . After thier volunteered service, they returned home to the 60 acre land to which their parents and their own families lived. later they took up three more 60 acre plots of leased land owed by the livingstons, and began raising up a farm. The old veteren was drawing $40.00 a year and the sons drawing $96.00 a year in which togather they were able to purchase the land on which they were living. This all was one stretch of land of 120 acres.
John Senior raised his childern and watched them raise their childern on this same stretch of land in which they now all occupied for 62 years.
John Sr and Maria's oldest daughter, Maria married Stephen DeForest and raised a large family.
Their daughter,Fhinney/Sophronia (Fanny) married Geradus(or Grandus) Lewis and also raised a large family but in the town of Woodstock.
In January of 1842, the old revolutionary man John Yerry died at the age of 84. On Red Hill Road. Now Yerry Hill Road. His wife,Anna Maria lived on to be 98 years.
the oldest son,Henry, raised 12 childern til he passed on at the age of 78. and remained married to his, wife Rebecca, til his death. Rebecca lived til she was 80 years of age.
John Jr. raised 8 childern and passed away at the age of 86 and remained married to his wife, Catherine,
til his death.
One of the other sons, Philip, had 9 childern and his wife's name was Hannah. They were both still alive at this time on the land, Philip being 84 and Hannah being 82.
the other son, Geradus/Jeremy/Jeremiah had two daughters with his wife Eleanor. The daughters names were, Euphemia and Mary.
And John's youngest son, Christopher still lived on the land with his second wife (name unknown) he was 82. At this age he was still able to go out and chop two cords of wood in 10 hours. Both he and his wife were very strong and heathy. In german/dutch, they called him 'Stuffle', (pronouced, 'Stooffel') they use to always raise flax and make thier own clothing, tan their hides into leather to make their own boots and shoes. They grew grain to make bread, ground their own coffee, made their own sugar and molasses and also made cider and drink.
They all built their own homes and raised many  childern on this land who would live  long  lives as did their parents and grand parents.
The whole family worked together and helped each other through out the years. They were very close. The famlies still live close to each other within miles and minutes. Though some have moved on to other states and farther cities in New York State.

This was information that Roger Yerry was kind enough to send to me, which he got the information from a women who took in upon herself to do the story on the family. Her name is unknown.
Corrections on some information: Christopher was actually the son of Johannes' second marriage to Maria Risely. Some things I added to the story such as the oldest dau, Maria being married to Stephen DeForrest found later. name corrections, such as: Phinney and Gerardus Yerry and Gerardus Lewis's
