| We still love Space, we do. So much so, that on Wednesday 24th March some of us went gallivanting off to Manchester to see them again. At just after 3pm I was wandering nervously into the pub at New Street Station to meet my husband Marc for the first time. Long silences, giggling and looking out of the window ensued, even as far as Manchester Piccadilly where we met up with Billy, the man with undoubtedly Space-dom's biggest grin, and Lotte, who would guide us on our voyage. We made it to the hotel, Marc having a bit of a "I can't sleep in this room, it belongs to someone else" palaver and eventually ending up next door to me. We then went to the Union for a couple of drinks and some food in the bar before going up to the gig venue, getting a place right at the front. The support act - Riley - were good, although most of our attention seemed to be on the amusing fact that the lead guitarist's fly was undone. (Billy cruelly told us not to tell him). At 9.15pm - it was Space time! The setlist went as follows: Mister Psycho Punk Rock Funeral Suburban Rock and Roll Paranoid 6Teen Neighbourhood Hell's Barbeque Spiders Zombies Pretty Suicide Hitchhiking Dark Clouds The English Language Quiet Beach 20 Million Miles From Earth Female of the Species Me & You Versus the World Encores: Money Avenging Angels We were particularly made up by the inclusion of Spiders - something I never thought I'd hear live - and a new version of Dark Clouds which turned a song I'd always found fairly mediocre into an absolutely great, rocking one. Hurrah! Perhaps the highlight of the evening however, was Billy (who Space know and recognise) getting us backstage. It was an extremely weird experience to dash behind a curtain at the side of the stage and find Yorkie there waiting for us. And then to walk downstairs and enter a room containing a man who I've had a crush on since I was fourteen years old. And for that man to come and shake my hand and say hello and later put his arm round me for a photo. All four of them are complete sweethearts, chatting to us, giving us beer and laughing as we graffitied the fridge. We eventually left, tired but made up, saying goodbye to Lotte outside the Union and walking (or hobbling, in my case... stupid stilletos) back to the hotel where we sat up chatting for a while. We went to bed at about 2am, sleeping extremely well, looking forward to next time. Can't wait to see them (and Marc and Billy) in Glasgow on 7th April (haaaaardcoooore). "TAKE ME OOOUT!" Pictures coming soon. |
