My New Best Friend CH 1

Nikolas sat at his usual table at Kelly’s and as usual it was filled with books. He sighed as he thought about all the studying he had to do still. It was his choice though. His uncle didn’t make him get a degree in business; in fact he didn’t support him at all. But Nikolas insisted that if he was going to take over the family business when he came of age, that he would know what he was doing. So not only did he have to go to school but he also had a job that he needed to pay for his education. Between his studies and his job at L&B, he had no time for any kind of social life.

“Nikolas! Hello!” Lucky said waving his hands in front of his brother’s face. “Oh sorry Lucky I was reading.” Nik said putting his book down. “What’s up?” He asked looking at his brother who was now sitting across from him. “I just wanted to know if you want to go out tonight? My cousin Carly’s club is opening tonight.” Lucky said. Nik made a face at his brother. “Lucky, you can’t stand your cousin.” Nik reminded him. “I know, I know but it’s supposed to be a great place.” Lucky said. “Well that’s nice but I’m afraid I can’t.” Nik said pointing to the books on the table in front of him. Lucky shook his head at his brother. “Man you never go out!” Lucky exclaimed. “I know but maybe next time OK?” Nik said. Lucky nodded his head and got up and headed towards the counter to see his girlfriend Elizabeth, leaving Nik back to his books.

“What’s wrong Lucky?” Liz asked with concern as she noticed his distraught appearance. “Nothing, I’m fine.” Lucky mumbled. Liz gave him a look telling him that she didn’t believe him. “I’m just concerned about my brother.” Lucky admitted. Liz looked over at Nikolas who was busy studying. “What about him?” She asked confused. “Liz, look at him. He never goes out. He studies all the time and he has like no friends.” Lucky said. “Well he’s just a quite guy.” Liz said. “But he doesn’t even talk to us that much, or any of our friends.” Lucky said. Liz nodded as she continued looking over at Nik. Lucky did have a point. Nikolas looked so lonely all the time. She couldn’t help but feel bad for him. “You’re right, I’ll go talk to him.” Liz stated making her way around the counter and heading for Nik’s table.

“Hi Nikolas.” Liz said sitting across from him. “Hi.” Nik said glancing up briefly at her before looking back at his book. “Is there a day next week that you have open?” Liz asked. Nik looked up at her and knitted his eyebrows. “Why?” He asked. “Well, I have this friend. Her name is Courtney and she’s a really sweet girl.” Liz said in a hopeful tone. Nik knew where she was going with this and shook his head. “Look Elizabeth, that’s really sweet of you to want to set me up with someone but I really have no time for a relationship right now.” Nik said smiling warmly at her. “Are you sure? She’s really nice.” Liz said. “I’m sure she is but really, I just don’t have time right now.” Nik said. “OK, but if you ever want to meet her just let me know.” Liz said. “I will.” Nik said nodding. Liz walked back over to Lucky. “We need to do something soon.” Liz said to Lucky who nodded in agreement.

Nik looked down at his book but was no longer focusing on his studying. He would be lying if he said that he didn’t want someone special in his life. He never even knew how it felt to truly love a woman. There was Kathryn Bell, but that wasn’t love at all. And then there was Sarah, Liz’s sister. But that was merely what people call “puppy love” and nothing more. So the idea of loving a woman more than anyone else in the world seemed exciting to him. But his life was so filled with chaos right now that he just couldn’t even think of brining a woman into the mix. It would just complicate his life even more then it already was.

“What are you thinking Liz?” Lucky asked, leaning over the counter. “I don’t know, we need to find him the perfect girl first.” Liz said. “Well why not Courtney?” He asked. “I just don’t think she’s the one. Besides, Courtney’s life is crazy enough as it is with her family. She doesn’t deserve to have to put up with his crazy family too.” Liz said. “Maybe we’ll find someone at The No Name tonight?” Lucky said. Liz gasped. “Oh my god what am I doing! I have to go get ready, I’ll talk to you later.” Liz said as she leaned over and kissed Lucky before jogging upstairs.

“Are you sure you don’t want to come?” Lucky said walking up to his brother. Nik looked up and smiled. “Sorry man. I mean it though, maybe next time. Oh and hey we have that dinner at moms tomorrow night so I’ll see you there.” Nik said. Lucky nodded. “OK, I’ll see you later then!” Lucky said, heading out the door.

Nik sighed, he hated to turn his brother down like he always did whenever he asked him to go somewhere. He wanted to get closer to his brother but his first priority was with his uncle who had raised him. He was determined to make him proud one day by taking over his family’s business and turning it in to something good.
