Conditions intolerable - whose definition ? |
Intolerable is subjective, depends on you ask. Even more difficult is that there's no end of things to which it could be applied. |

So what? |

Dunno really, it just seemed such a definitive statement, but given second thought it's really pretty open ended. It strikes me that that points up something in society that scares me - we're fed these certainties day in, day out . Bombarded by them in fact and its all so wrong. The world doesn't work on such masculine concepts of order and control. Nothing is that black and white but after really only such a little history of 24hr multimedia overload (what 10 years? max ?) the way society seems to have adjusted to take the lead from something remote and detached as opposed to something based on human interaction is serious cause for concern. Think about this for a minute - it is now perfectly possible to live your life without leaving the house : ever. You could go through life without ever having to put up with the irritation of another human being : ever. No, really you could do it. If you worked from home in computers, a writer , painter or something or even better - in the media (ah sweet irony !!), get yourself fast broadband access and baring ill health why else would you have to go outside unless you chose to? Well, why? You wouldn't have to would you? No, not unless you chose to. In many ways I think this is already happening, I think the trend is for a reducing circle of relationships. On a low level kinda scale not some massive cultural shift- and the world we are fed into our little hermetically sealed wombs we call homes sucks us in with its glamours, it's more inviting, more vibrant, more perfect than the chaotic place full of real people. Its also a lot easier, less effort and probably most attractively - risk free. |

And even more scarily, it's only just begun. 10 years is no time at all for such a massive shift in culture. And the technology ? Well that's kinda at the Sopwith Camel stage you know? What's it gonna be like when its developed to the Stealth Bomber stage? Virtual Reality coming soon to a womb near you. Why'd you want to go out? Perhaps I misjudge me fellow humans, but you know what? And I'm gonna sound like a right cunt now - I don't think that the majority of people are intelligent enough to see past it and they'll go down the road without even knowing it. Before you get all arsey with me, I'm up there with 'em. I see the attraction, I play the game. I'm a growing a whole cyber personality for fucks sake - after all I'm a child of my times. But at least I see whats going on. |

Maybe I'm wrong. Perhaps the human instinct to be with others is stronger than what I worry about. The drive to interact, communicate and feel is surely such an integral part of being human that nothing could repress it. Well I would hope so. And again, I can use myself as evidence: my personal journey has arrived at the point of needing validation from other people - I'm not content on my own and need to interact with real people. I don't dispute this and it's just one little example of the need to socialise. No as I said it's the speed of it that scares me. Only ten years and a shift in consciousness already? Ten years is absolutely fuck all in terms of evolutionary/ecological/biological scale, it's so insignificant it s not even measurable - where was Mankind at 10,000 years ago? Exactly, - and we are talking ten years. |
